CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study

Pastoral leadership is an example of spiritual leadership which is
always the most difficult type of leadership. It is difficult because in this
type of leadership, people are not under any compulsion to obey your
instructions or follow you. It is called Spiritual leadership because
although men are saddled with the responsibility of leading others, yet
they are consciously and willingly leading in submission to the Ultimate
Being-God. This is to say that they lead with His principles and are aware
of the fact that they will render account of their leadership at the end.

The subject of leadership is so broad in nature. It is broad in application
and broad as a discipline. In application, leadership is seen in all levels of
relationships, ranging from family to community to organization etc. As a
discipline, it has many branches which include natural leadership,
political leadership, spiritual leadership etc. Therefore, Pastoral leadership which is the leadership of the
Church is a corporate effort of Christ the Chief Shepherd and pastoral
leaders the under-shepherd. This implies that whatever the pastoral
leaders need in order to shepherd the flock, they must look unto the Chief
Shepherd as the source. Hence, how effective the pastoral leaders are in
shepherding the flock to grow will now revolve around one thing –
relationship: their ability to relate with Christ the Chief shepherd and
source of everything, their ability to relate with themselves as undershepherds, and their ability to relate with the flocks who are the recipient
of whatever they get from Christ the Chief Shepherd.
In view of the above, the relationships of pastoral leaders now
become the pivotal point in which everything revolves. Therefore, readers
of this research work should expect to get details of what these
relationships should be, their correlation with the growth of the Church.

1.2 Statement of Problem
More than a decade ago, the leadership expert John Maxwell,
introduced two timeless ideologies into the leadership philosophies. He
asserts that: 1. ―Leadership is influence-nothing more, nothing less.‖
(Maxwell, 16). 2. ―Everything rises and falls on leadership.‖ (Maxwell,
123). If everything rises and falls on leadership, and leadership is
influence, it will logically follows that everything rises and falls on

influence. Applying this to Church growth, it will mean that the growth of
the Church rises and falls on influence. But then, whose influence? The
influence of the pastoral leader. Therefore, on the premise of the second
assertion of Maxwell, it can be logically inferred that the growth of the
Church rises and falls on pastoral leadership.
In view of this, the following questions will arise:
1. In the context of Christ for the world Church, how true is the fact
that Church growth rises and falls on pastoral leadership?
2. How is the growth of Christ or the world Church?
3. How is the pastoral leadership of Christ or the world Church and
how does it affect the growth of the Church?
These are what the researcher intends to investigate as well as proffer
suggestions for possible solutions.

1.3 Purpose and Objective of Study
This research work is aim at investigating the influence of the
pastoral leaders on the growth of the Church with regard to the case
study. This will mean evaluating both pastoral leaders and members of
the case study to show the effect of the influence of the pastoral leaders.
Therefore, at the end of this research, one should be able to know what pastoral leadership is, its cardinal factor, what Church growth is, the
factors that influence it, its problems as well as get suggestions for
possible solutions.
1.4 Significance of Study
This research work will be a working tool as long as the leadership
of Christ Faith Church Calabar is concerned. This research work will be
of immense significance to other congregations due to the fact that most
congregations share the same fate when it comes to pastoral leadership
and the problems of Church growth.
This material will also serve as a reference work to researchers in
related fields of study as it is capable of gingering research into related
fields of study.
1.5 Scope of Study
This research is delimited to pastoral leaders across Christ for the World
Church. The members at the headquarter assembly were used as
sample for the survey associated with members. Also, literatures that are
related with pastoral leadership as well as Church growth and the
different subjects under them were brought into close lights.
