CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background study

Marriage is a sacred institution in the Christian faith, symbolizing the union between Christ and the Church. However, in recent years, there has been a significant increase in broken marriages, leading to detrimental effects on the Church. According to Smith[1], broken marriages not only affect the individuals involved but also have a profound impact on the spiritual well-being of the Church community. This literature review aims to explore the theological analysis of broken marriage and its effects on the Church.

One of the key theological aspects to consider when analyzing broken marriages is the concept of covenant. In the Bible, marriage is often described as a covenant between a man and a woman, with God as the witness and guarantor of the covenant. As highlighted by Johnson[2], when a marriage is broken, it signifies a breach of the covenant relationship, which can have far-reaching consequences for the individuals involved and the Church as a whole. This theological perspective emphasizes the importance of upholding the sanctity of marriage within the Church community.

Broken marriage may well be one of the major problems facing the Church today. Ordinarily, an ideal marriage will remain united, undivided, and unbroken. This is the plan written by the mind of the Creator when He gave Eve to Adam as his permanent partner in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:24). Apostel Paul expressed the same view, when he recalled Christ’s prohibition of broken marriage:

To those, now married, however, I give this command (though it is not mine, it is the Lord’s) a wife must not separate from her husband. If she does separate, she must either remain single or become reconciled to him again. Similarly, a husband must not broken marriage his wife. (1 Cor. 7: 10-11).

This passage demonstrates that broken marriage is undesirable, and should not be permitted in the Christian communities. All efforts must be made to encourage couples to stay together or get back together, even when they have separated. However, the intention of this study is not to provide a solution to the social problems caused by marriage and broken marriage. Rather, the purpose of this study is to place the problem of marriage and broken marriage in a proper context with respect to the Foursquare Gospel Church, Mupin, Ota, Ogun State.

Broken marriage connotes the division or the separation of parent who have been together and suddenly broken marriage or terminated their relationship or untie the once agreed marriage knot after exchanging material vows and have lived together. Marriage is an institution that play very important role in the upbringing and the development of human beings, marriage is the joining together of two matured people who agree to spend their lifetime together. Thus taking joint care or responsibility over their children who are the fruits of the union. Marriage aids the realization of many basic individual needs such as the need for status. Companionship, procreation and the need to fulfilling sexual intimacy and satisfaction.

In fact the institution is gradually losing its standard value as statistics show that it is fast diminishing as many homes are broken. The problem of single parenthood is far alarming in our society and the explanations for broken marriage include among other thongs cheerlessness, parental interference, religious conflicts, poverty and poor mutual understanding. The Christian marriage is not just a mere marriage. Christian marriage is unique, and has been instituted by Christ as a Sacrament. Therefore, this indicates that any Christian marriage should reflect the mind of Christ. Above all, Christian marriage is indissoluble, and is guided by conjugal love. For this reason, it is important for yettobeChristian spouses to be fully and adequately instructed to the teachings of the Church.

Married Christian couples publicly agreed before the church to remain husband and wife for better or for worse, to remain faithful, and above all to love each other as Christ loves His Church. In marriage, two partners become one flesh, a concept that is predicated by love. The couples ought to love each other in Christ-like love. This love is boundless; it was for the love Christ had for the world that He was able to die for our sins. Christ remains the head of the Church, and He loves the church unconditionally. Ina similar manner, the husband is considered the head of the family, and should love his wife and family unconditionally. However, the husband should not lord his headship over the wife, but must love and provide for the family. The husband should be prepared to give his entire life for his wife and children. He should work for them. However, this type of self-sacrifice can only be possible where conjugal love exists and prevails.

Another theological aspect to consider is the impact of broken marriages on the Church’s witness to the world. The Church is called to be a reflection of God’s love and faithfulness, and broken marriages can undermine this witness. As noted by Thompson[3], when marriages within the Church fail, it can lead to a loss of credibility and hinder the Church’s ability to effectively share the Gospel message. This highlights the need for the Church to address the issue of broken marriages and provide support and guidance to couples in crisis.

Furthermore, broken marriages can also have a ripple effect on the overall health and unity of the Church community. When couples experience marital difficulties, it can create tension and division within the congregation. As discussed by Davis[4], unresolved conflicts and broken relationships can hinder the Church’s ability to function as a united body, impacting its ability to carry out its mission effectively. Therefore, it is crucial for the Church to address the theological implications of broken marriages and work towards restoration and healing within the community.

1.2       Statement Of The Problem

The issue of broken marriage is no longer an isolated issue nor a local issue but a global concern. Broken is one of the troublesome trends in our world today. The aim of the study is to investigate ttheological analysis of broken marriage and its effects on the Church on Foursquare Gospel Church Mopin.

Broken marriages have become a prevalent issue in today’s society, and their effects on the church cannot be ignored. Theological analysis of this problem is crucial in understanding the underlying causes and consequences of broken marriages within the church community. By examining the theological perspectives on marriage and the impact of broken marriages on the church, we can gain insights into how the church can address this issue and provide support to individuals and families affected by broken marriages.

The significance of studying the theological analysis of broken marriage and its effects on the church lies in the fact that the church is often seen as a place of refuge and guidance for individuals and families facing marital challenges. However, the increasing number of broken marriages within the church raises questions about the effectiveness of the church’s role in addressing this issue. Understanding the theological aspects of broken marriages can help the church develop strategies and interventions that align with its teachings and values, ultimately leading to stronger and healthier marriages within the church community.

Despite the importance of studying the theological analysis of broken marriage and its effects on the church, there is a lack of comprehensive research in this area. Existing studies often focus on the psychological and sociological aspects of broken marriages, neglecting the theological dimensions. Additionally, most research has been conducted in Western contexts, leaving a gap in our understanding of how different cultural and religious backgrounds influence the experiences of broken marriages within the church. Therefore, this literature review aims to fill these gaps by synthesizing existing literature and identifying areas for further research.

1.5       Significance of the study

The significance of this study lies in its exploration of the impact of broken marriages on the church. Marriage is a sacred institution within the Christian faith, and when marriages break down, it not only affects the individuals involved but also has wider implications for the church community. By examining the theological aspects of broken marriages and their effects on the church, this study aims to shed light on the challenges faced by the church in addressing this issue and provide insights for pastoral care and support.

Understanding the effects of broken marriages on the church is crucial for church leaders, pastors, and counselors who play a vital role in providing guidance and support to individuals and families going through marital difficulties. By delving into the theological dimensions of this issue, this study will contribute to the development of effective strategies and interventions that can help the church better respond to the needs of its members and promote healing and restoration within broken marriages.

This study also holds significance for the wider Christian community as it addresses a topic that is relevant to believers across different denominations and cultural contexts. The effects of broken marriages on the church are not limited to a specific region or group; they are universal. By examining this issue from a theological perspective, this study aims to provide insights that can be applied in various church settings, fostering a more holistic understanding of the challenges faced by the church in relation to broken marriages.

Furthermore, this study’s significance lies in its potential to contribute to the existing body of theological literature on marriage and family. While there is a wealth of research on marriage and its societal implications, there is a need for more theological analysis that specifically focuses on the effects of broken marriages on the church. By filling this gap, this study will enrich the theological discourse on marriage, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform future research and theological discussions.

Finally, the significance of this study extends beyond the academic realm. By shedding light on the theological aspects of broken marriages and their effects on the church, this research has the potential to bring about positive change within the church community. It can help raise awareness, promote dialogue, and encourage the development of supportive structures and resources that can assist individuals and families facing marital challenges. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the well-being and flourishing of the church as it navigates the complexities of broken marriages and seeks to provide love, care, and healing to its members.
