ABSTRACT

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is significantly changing old ways of sending, receiving, storing, retrieving and analyzing messages and data. Every sphere of life is caught up in this inevitable net of information revolution. The Church being a socio-religious organization is also involve in this net of information revolution offered by Information and Communication Technology and its many benefits and opportunities. This study thus took a critical look at the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the postmodern church with particular references to Foursquare Gospel Church, LIFE Chapel International, Ikorodu, Lagos that is making great utilization of ICT in the daily management of the Church and the church members. The research work adopts library/field based approach; this includes the study of related materials, books and the use of questionnaire. The research work revealed that majority of the Church members have knowledge of computer and the use of internet. And a good many of them use the social network to communicate with their love ones and to follow up church programs on the internet. The researcher hereby recommends that the church should get hold of the opportunities offered by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in order to propagate the gospel, because the world has become a global village and everyone is interconnected.

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

Each day the wheel of progress continues to turn bringing about significant changes in human endeavours. Man, the rational animal on the face of the earth, has from crude methods of communication developed highly sophisticated ways of communicating. The new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) or Technologies are rapidly changing our old ways of sending, receiving, storing and analysing messages and data. Many barriers that militated against effective communication are day-after-day being dismantled. Technology as understood, is much talk about and almost an indispensable part of today’s society.1

Technology has given Christianity a voice to reach a world-wide audience. Historically there have been advances for Christianity when there have been advances in technology. Not all Christian groups have reacted to it as have the Amish. In many cases the Church has been one of the first entities to adopt or profit from technologies. In the mid 1400’s Gothenburg set up the printing press and published the first mechanically printed Bible. This was, to a large part, a factor in the start of the Reformation. The printing press enabled ideas to flow rapidly and in large quantities to very large audiences. William Tyndale translated the Bible into English and had it printed and distributed in the early 1500’s. During the same time period, Martin Luther was printing pamphlet after pamphlet in order to explain his views to an interested Europe. He also translated and had printed the Bible into German. It remains the standard German work to this day. In 1644 the English Parliament sought to censor printing because they felt it was necessary to repress certain dangerous ideas, especially regarding religion.2

John Milton argued passionately that ideas, even heretical ones, needed to be exchanged. Even 600 years ago the effect of technology on Christianity was a topic for discussion and debate. Jacques Ellul mentioned that technology always has bas as well as good effects. He also asserts that technology develops a dynamic of its own. Neil postman observes that technology has displaced traditional culture, to our great harm. It is quite possible to see how technology has displaced the traditional culture of Christianity, especially in the way that worship and church work is conducted. Thomas Corts, writing in an article in the most recent Southern Baptist Educator Journal of 2005, says “I had hoped that the billions we have spent on Sunday Schools, day schools and vacation bible schools would produce a generation that has its values correct. I would have thought the vast sums spent on television preaching might have turned the tide. I wish all the church buildings and church going had made a consistent and measurable difference. But we are left to admit: the divorce rate is about the same among those who attend church and those who do not. The 70 percent of men between the ages of 18 and 34 who visit a pornography web site at least once a month includes believers and church goers. The ranks of the high and mighty, white collar elite who have bilked us for billions include those Bible-carrying, church-going, God-talking criminals who will escape jail only by legal slight-of-hand, if they do escape. As the Barna organization has concluded, “Peoples’ faith does not make as much of a difference as might be expected.”3
