Chapter 1Introduction1.1LEADERSHIPIn the world today, companies, political organisationsor sport teamsdepend on strong leadership for optimumeffectiveness or success.Itis common that when such different organisationssucceed, everybody becomes a hero or heroine;but when they fail, people are quickto blame it on leadership. Thus leadership is central to any organisation. Suppose a rugby, soccer or cricketteam wins a match, comments like‘it was a team effort’are made, but the tone immediatelychanges whenthe team losses. One then hears remarks like ‘we need to fire the coach’ and ‘he does not know what he is doing’.Thiswas recentlyseenin the Premier Soccer League when Orlando Pirates won the league for 2010/2011 season–the team was praised, the management, the playersandeven the supporters. However, this did not happen withother teams that did not win the league. On the contrary somefired theirrespectivecoaches. Both the public and the private sectorsspend a lot of money investing inleadership, hiring expertsto head big organisations.Today, companies pay theirCEOs and executives lucratively. The payment of such huge salaries is justified by arguing thatsucha leader brought the optimum results the company needed, thusturning a blind eye on thecontribution of the general labourers.Sometimes the infighting within political organisations is not based on debate or intellectual engagement but jostling for positions. Some, for example, quit their currentpolitical organisation easily to start their own, in makingsure that they stay inleadership for selfish reasons. Butfor those who stay, in most cases, their loyalty isflimsy because it is basedona specific leader rather than sticking to the principles of the organisation.Leaders have a tendency of stayinginpower infear of being judged or even incarcerated; at the end they remain corrupt for as long as they remain inleadership. One is of theview thatAfricaas acontinent is in a leadership crisis rather than a resource or financial one.
