CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the Study

This study, an Evaluation of Funding Home Missions is a response to the reactions of missionaries on the basis of little or no assistance for missions from individuals, groups or churches that may have sent them. The researcher has discovered an impression that the Bible is not a book about theology as such, but rather, a record of theology in missions (God in action on behalf of the salvation of mankind) with assistance from individuals, people and those who helped in making it reach to the most hidden locations of the world today. Following the view of Georg F. Vicedom, “the Bible in its totality ascribes only one intention to God: to save mankind. And the end result will be the glorification of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Furthermore, it is discovered that the missionary task bears within it something of the nature of the ultimate, something that centuries, circumstances nor cultures can change; which therefore demands a good concentration and may be altered by funding role.

Only, few commentators dealt exhaustively with the great commission passages. Dr Karl Barth, a scholar in the theology of Christian mission and Dr R. D. Culver who published in the Bulletin of the Evangelical Theological Society. The researcher sees them to have only a partial presentation of the great commission because both men, however, failed to see the total scope of the great commission but limited their studies to only the gospel of Mathew. The interpretation of the great commission passages as the researcher further discovers, has differed greatly through the centuries and has caused a great deal of discussion. Debate has revolved around the address of the words and brought questions; were they spoken to the disciples as  the apostles of Jesus Christ or as representatives of the church of Jesus Christ and thus exists as a part of the church’s commission unto the end of the age? Evangelical scholarship has sought to answer some of these questions, believing that the commission is addressed to the church and must be obeyed unto the end of the age. The church both as individual and institution however has roles to play. This study however centres on the evaluation of funding home missions in the light of III John 2-8 using Kingdom Outreach International Ministry, Lagos as a case study.

  • Statement of the Problem

Considering the myriads of challenges of evangelism as a result of funding problems for missions with its alarming effects on the growth of the body of Christ and the deficiency in the propagation of the gospel in reaching the unreached, the researcher is prepared to critically analyse and explain the III Epistle of John with emphasis on the evaluation of funding home missions in Kingdom Outreach International Ministry, Lagos as a case study.

In addition, having observed the deficiency and slackness in the propagation of the gospel due to some sagas in ethics of the missionaries and funding role, this study proffered viable solutions to curb this menace that hinders the propagation of the gospel for home missions today.

  • Purpose of the study

This research is carried out in order to achieve the following purposes:
