CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1.   Background to the Study

Church administration and management have become increasingly relevant in our current dispensation in Ghana. The church, as a religious institution, plays a significant role in the social, economic, and spiritual lives of Ghanaians. As such, effective administration and management are crucial for the church to fulfill its mission and vision (Agyeman, 2017). The church’s administrative functions include planning, organizing, directing, and controlling its resources to achieve its objectives. These functions are essential in ensuring the smooth running of the church and its various ministries.

The church’s management, on the other hand, involves the coordination of human, financial, and material resources to achieve the church’s goals. This includes the recruitment and training of church workers, financial management, and the maintenance of church facilities (Owusu-Ansah & Poku, 2013). Effective management is crucial in ensuring that the church’s resources are used efficiently and effectively. It also helps to prevent conflicts and misunderstandings among church members and leaders.

In the current dispensation, the church in Ghana faces numerous challenges that require effective administration and management. These challenges include the proliferation of churches, competition for members, and the need to maintain relevance in a rapidly changing society (Agyeman, 2017). The church also faces financial challenges, as it relies on the voluntary contributions of its members for its operations. Effective administration and management can help the church to navigate these challenges and remain relevant in the society.

The relevance of church administration and management in Ghana is also evident in the church’s role in community development. Many churches in Ghana are involved in various community development projects, such as the provision of schools, hospitals, and other social amenities (Owusu-Ansah & Poku, 2013). These projects require effective administration and management to ensure their success. The church’s involvement in community development also enhances its image and influence in the society.

Furthermore, the church’s administration and management are crucial in ensuring the spiritual growth of its members. The church’s primary mission is to spread the gospel and nurture its members in the Christian faith (Agyeman, 2017). This requires effective administration and management of the church’s spiritual programs and activities. The church’s administration and management also play a role in maintaining discipline and order among its members.

In conclusion, the relevance of church administration and management in our current dispensation in Ghana cannot be overemphasized. The church plays a significant role in the lives of Ghanaians, and its effective administration and management are crucial for its success. However, more research is needed to explore the specific challenges and opportunities facing church administration and management in Ghana.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The problem of church administration and management in our current dispensation in Ghana is multifaceted. The first issue is the lack of professional training for church administrators. Many church leaders in Ghana are not formally trained in administration and management, which can lead to inefficiencies and mismanagement (Agyapong, 2013). This lack of training can also result in a lack of strategic planning, which is crucial for the growth and development of the church.

The second issue is the lack of financial transparency and accountability. According to a study by Asamoah (2015), many churches in Ghana do not have proper financial management systems in place. This lack of transparency can lead to financial mismanagement and can undermine the trust of the congregation.

The third issue is the lack of effective communication within the church. A study by Osei-Bonsu (2017) found that many churches in Ghana do not have effective communication strategies in place. This can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts within the church, which can hinder its growth and development.

The fourth issue is the lack of proper governance structures. According to a study by Agyeman (2018), many churches in Ghana do not have clear governance structures in place. This lack of structure can lead to power struggles and conflicts within the church.

The fifth issue is the lack of engagement with the wider community. A study by Mensah (2019) found that many churches in Ghana do not actively engage with their local communities. This lack of engagement can limit the church’s impact and influence in the community.

The sixth issue is the lack of adaptability. According to a study by Boateng (2020), many churches in Ghana are not adapting to the changing needs and expectations of their congregations. This lack of adaptability can lead to a decline in church attendance and participation.

1.2.   Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the relevance of church administration and management in our current dispensation. The specific objectives of the study are:

1.6. Significance of the Study

The study of the relevance of church administration and management in our current dispensation is of great significance as it provides a comprehensive understanding of the role that church leaders play in the modern era. As society evolves, so do the challenges and demands faced by religious institutions. This study aims to shed light on how church administration and management have adapted to these changes and continue to function effectively.

The significance of this study also lies in its potential to identify the challenges faced by church administrators in effectively managing the church in the present era. By understanding these challenges, the study can provide insights into the areas that need improvement or adjustment. This can lead to the development of strategies and solutions that can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of church management.

Furthermore, the study is significant as it seeks to understand the impact of effective church management on the spiritual growth of the congregation. The spiritual growth of the congregation is a key indicator of the success of a church. By examining the relationship between church management and spiritual growth, the study can provide valuable insights into how church administration can foster a conducive environment for spiritual development.

The study also holds significance in its aim to evaluate the strategies employed by church administrators in managing the church’s resources. Resource management is a critical aspect of church administration, and understanding how it is currently being handled can provide a benchmark for best practices. This can lead to the development of more effective strategies for resource management in the church.

Additionally, the study is significant as it can contribute to the body of knowledge on church administration and management. It can provide a contemporary perspective on the subject, enriching the existing literature and providing a basis for future research.

Lastly, the findings of this study can be beneficial for church administrators, congregation members, and other stakeholders in the religious community. By understanding the relevance of church administration and management in our current dispensation, they can make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to enhance the functioning and impact of the church.
