CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The effect of challenges in leadership on Church Growth is a complex and multifaceted area of study. Leadership plays a crucial role in the growth and development of churches, as it influences the direction, vision, and effectiveness of the organization. Challenges in leadership can arise from various factors, such as internal conflicts, external pressures, and changing societal dynamics.

Leadership is indeed a dynamic reciprocal process of personal influence by which a manager or a leader shapes the attitudes and activities of others towards the achievement or attainment of organizational objectives (Abogunrin, 1986). Even before the modern concepts of leadership came into being, the apostle of Jesus Christ, Paul in the Pastorals lists the qualifications for church leaders to ensure sustainable growth and survival (Dairo, 2007). These have remained the model for ages. For any church leader to steer the ship of the church successfully, these qualities must be imbibed. But contemporary experience in Nigeria has shown a marked departure from this Pauline list of qualifications for church leaders which has really affected growth and survival of churches. The level of understanding expected from both the leaders and the followers is missing in most cases. This often results in crises within “the body of Christ”.

There are some common features in various definitions of leadership. It will be presumptuous for anyone to attempt a definition that will satisfy the populace especially regarding church leadership. Leadership is nothing if not linked to collective purpose; and the effectiveness of leaders must be judged not by press clippings but by actual social change, measured by intent and by satisfaction of human needs and expectations which on the long term will be visible on the church growth and development.

Oluwasegun (2005) defines leadership as the ability to gain consensus and commitment to common objectives beyond organizational requirements which are attained with experience or contribution and satisfaction on the part of the working group. Leadership could also be defined as the relationship in which one person or the leader influences others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain that which the leader desires. It is a means of direction. Leadership is the ability of management to induce the subordinates to work towards a group’s goals with confidence and keenness. It implies that the leader accepts responsibility for the achievement of the group objectives and it is, therefore, essential for the trust and cooperation from both sides to be evidence all the time (Oluwasegun, 2005).

Leadership is an art of getting things done. It can be learnt, improved, developed and perfected. It is the key process of influence and the process always includes a number of key components such as leader and followers, they interact in situations and means of influence which emerge from the leader and from the followers, based on their value system and goals which the leader and the followers seek to achieve (Dairo, 2004).

With respect to church leadership, it implies that the church leader gives direction, motivates, reprimands and develops a set objective along with his group and resolves individual or group needs within the church. This is perceived as the only way towards the church growth and survival. In the New Testament it was more often used as Christological title for the exalted Jesus. The results of semasiological and lexicographical investigation of secular Greek indicate an extremely polyvalent spectrum of meaning for the word “church leader”, the basis being he who is the first, who stands at the head of, who leads.

One of the key effects of challenges in leadership on Church Growth is the potential for division and conflict within the congregation. When leaders face challenges, it can create a sense of uncertainty and instability among the members, leading to disagreements and even schisms. This can hinder the growth of the church and impact its overall effectiveness in fulfilling its mission.

Another effect of challenges in leadership is the potential for a decline in morale and motivation among the members. When leaders struggle to address challenges effectively, it can create a sense of disillusionment and apathy among the congregation. This can result in decreased participation, decreased financial support, and a general decline in the church’s growth and impact.

 

Furthermore, challenges in leadership can also impact the church’s ability to attract and retain new members. Effective leadership is often seen as a key factor in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for newcomers. When leaders face challenges and fail to address them adequately, it can create a negative perception of the church and deter potential new members from joining.

 

On the other hand, challenges in leadership can also present opportunities for growth and transformation. When leaders successfully navigate and overcome challenges, it can strengthen their leadership skills and enhance their ability to guide the church towards growth. Additionally, challenges can also serve as catalysts for innovation and change, prompting leaders to reassess their strategies and adapt to new circumstances.

 

According to the New Testament, the terms “bishop, “pastor,” and “elder” are synonymous. Bishop means “overseer,” and the elders had the responsibility of overseeing the work of the church (Acts 20:17,28; 1Pet5:1-3). “Elder” is the translation of the Greek word Presbytes, which means “an old man.” Paul used the word presbytery in (1Tim 4:14), referring not to a denomination, but to the “eldership” of the assembly that ordained Timothy (Bible Org. 2004). Elders and bishops (two names for the same office, (cf Titus 1:5,7) were mature people with spiritual wisdom and experience to ensure the survival of the church of God. Also, “pastor” means “shepherd,” one who leads and cares for the flock of God (Vine, 1996:67).

The effect of challenges in leadership on Church Growth is a complex and nuanced topic. While challenges can pose significant obstacles to growth, they can also present opportunities for learning, growth, and transformation. Effective leadership is crucial in addressing these challenges and guiding the church towards sustainable growth and impact.

 

1.2   Statement of the Problem

Challenges in leadership can have a significant impact on Church Growth. One of the main challenges is the lack of effective communication between leaders and their congregation. When leaders fail to effectively communicate their vision and goals, it can lead to confusion and a lack of direction within the church community. This can hinder growth as members may feel disconnected and unsure of how to contribute to the church’s mission.

 

Another challenge is the lack of strong leadership development programs within the church. Without proper training and mentorship, leaders may struggle to effectively lead and guide their congregation. This can result in a lack of motivation and direction, which can hinder the growth of the church. Investing in leadership development programs can help equip leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead effectively and foster church growth.

 

Additionally, the presence of internal conflicts and power struggles among leaders can also impact church growth. When leaders are divided and focused on personal agendas rather than the overall mission of the church, it can create a toxic environment that hinders growth. Resolving conflicts and promoting unity among leaders is crucial for creating a positive and supportive atmosphere that encourages church growth.

 

The lack of adaptability and innovation in leadership can also hinder church growth. In today’s rapidly changing world, it is important for leaders to be open to new ideas and approaches. Failure to adapt to changing circumstances and embrace innovation can result in stagnation and a failure to attract new members. Leaders must be willing to embrace change and explore new strategies to effectively reach and engage with the community.

 

Another challenge is the lack of accountability among leaders. When leaders are not held accountable for their actions and decisions, it can lead to a lack of trust and confidence within the congregation. This can hinder church growth as members may feel disillusioned and hesitant to actively participate in the church’s activities. Implementing systems of accountability and transparency can help foster trust and encourage active involvement, ultimately promoting church growth.

 

furthermore, the lack of diversity and inclusivity in leadership can also impact church growth. When leadership positions are prRiversminantly held by individuals from a specific demographic or background, it can alienate and exclude other members of the congregation. Embracing diversity and inclusivity in leadership can help create a welcoming and inclusive environment that attracts a wider range of individuals and promotes church growth (Dairo, 2008).

 

1.3   Purpose Of The Study

The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of challenges in leadership and its impact on Church Growth. The general objectives of the study are:

  1. To examine the impact of leader’s ministerial challenges on Church Growth.
  2. To evaluate the implication of leadership hierarchy issue on Church growth.
  3. To find out if the lack of financial management skills among leaders will affect Church growth.
  4. To identify the other factors militating against church growth and survival.

 

1.4. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. To examine the impact of leader’s ministerial challenges on Church Growth.

1.6   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The following are the significance of this study:

  1. Findings from this study will educate the church authorities and the general public in Nigeria on what the church leaders need to do or incorporate into the system to ensure growth and survival.
  2. This research will also serve as a resource base to other scholars and researchers interested in carrying out further research in this field subsequently, if applied will go to an extent to provide new explanation to the topic.

1.7   SCOPE/LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study will cover the activities of churches in Nigeria with special focus on the effect of challenges in leadership and its impact on Church Growth. The study is restricted to The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, Rivers Province 14

 

Limitations of study

  1. Financial constraint– Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
  2. Time constraint– The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
