Full Project – Public perception of solid waste management in Trans-Amadi industrial area of Port-Harcourt
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Solid waste is one of the environmental issues associated with industrial revolution.
Solid waste management (SWM) is defined as the direct generation, processing, treatment, recovery and disposal; of solid waste. It is a polite term for garbage management. Solid waste management is a solution in response to the world’s stinking and escalating problem: Garbage. Mounting waste problem has been the core foundation of hazardous illness, land depletion, and other negative up shot to the environment.
The system of handling trash, be it municipal waste collection, recycling programs, dumps incineration and gasification fall on the same category.
Solid waste management serves to cleanse society of its garbage. Cities with large population would be uninhabitable without these services. Waste management companies must effectively collect, transport and process waste in order for developed areas to maintain health codes. Solid wastes are large in number and varied in magnitude. They contain large quantities of raw products, and bye products. Many of these substances are toxic in nature, the effect of industrialization can be directly associated with environmental pollution, this is because of the waste materials associated with industrial activities.
Furthermore, the Oxford Advance Learners Dictionary defined perception as the way one notice things, especially with the senses.
The social phenomenon known as PUBLIC PERCEPTION can be seen as the difference between an absolute truth based on facts and a virtual truth shaped by popular opinion, media coverage and/ or reputation, celebrities, politicians and corporations all face the same scrutiny by the public they serve, and it can be very difficult to overcome a negative perception by the public. While individual companies/industries may strive to do the right things for the right reasons, how the public views the industry as a whole can make those things as a challenging to put into motion.
Public perception is not necessarily in accurate or based on something other than the truth.
The public at large can often receive enough factual information in order to form a general opinion about a public figure, celebrity or industry with out relying on unfounded rumors. There are instances, when the perception of a situation is affected by other issues, such as cultural bias or prejudice. Situations can be compounded by their effect on public perception.
Public perception of a given situation can be unrealistically positive or negative which can become problematic whenever the true facts emerge and corrective action must be taken. This is why many people feel very conflicted when a perceived good person is accuses of a crime or a perceived bad industry is not penalized for its actions. Public perception is very relevant and can shape public policies even jury out come.
SOCIAL PERCEPTION: This is a term in social psychology that defines an individual’s ability to create an impression or judgment of other individuals or social groups. This is formed through observation and understanding existing information about an issue and drawing out conclusions from the information.
This kind of perception is classified under social cognition, the brain’s ability to store and process available information associated with creatures of the same species.
Aside from available information, observers with different moods and temperament can account for a variety of perceptions.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
Man’s numerous activities of development are a major cause of environmental degradation. The inhabitants of Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout Port-Harcourt are faced with a lot of problems.
The rapid development in technology have all contributed to an increase in both the amount and the variety of solid wastes generated by industrial, domestic and other activities.
The problems of dealing with greater volumes of often more dangerous waste materials are particularly acute in developing countries where these changes have not been met by improvements in waste management technologies (Wilson & Balkau, 1990).
Even domestic solid waste has become a health hazard in many developing countries as a result of careless handling and a failure to organize appropriate solid waste collection schemes.
With rapid growth in the area, industrial, domestic and commercial solid waste generally tends to increase and constitutes threats to life, material assets and the environment at large. Government over the years has made effort to reduce the problem of solids waste management issues so as to proffer lasting solution.
In-spite of these efforts, the problem of solid waste management and pollution still persist.
Hence, it is the intention of this research to investigate public perception on solid waste management in Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout Port-Harcourt.
1.3 AIM OF THE STUDY
The general goal of this research is to investigate public perception on solid waste management in Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout Port-Harcourt.
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Some of the objectives of this study include:
- To identify how the public perceive the solid waste collection & disposal services in the study area.
- To identify some of the solid waste management Programs by the Government, non-Government organization (N.G.O) and Environmental protection Agency (E.P.A).
- To examine the various methods of solid waste disposal.
- To examine the adversities of the individual methods of solid waste disposal.
- To identify public perceptions of the risks to health associated with solid waste management.
- To recommend strategy for solving the problem.
- SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout Port-Harcourt is the geographical scope of this study.
It involves industries and house-holds that generate solid wastes and the public perceptions on its management.
- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The importance of this research is that it will assist the Government and the Environmental Protection Agencies (E.P.A) to device a proper means of solid waste management. It will also serve as a reference point to students and scholars of higher academic learning in their efforts to procure information about public perception, industrial waste and its management.
- LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
It is important to note that this study does not cover the whole of Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout Port-Harcourt. This is because of time constraint, lack of finance, non-availability of urgently needed materials and information.
Obviously, all aspects of this dissertation from the beginning of carrying out field survey to the final stage of conclusion requires huge amount of money in connection with the location of the study area.
- DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA
The area of this study is Trans-Amadi industrial layout which is in Obi/Akpo Local Government Area in the metropolis of Port Harcourt, one of the major centers of economic activities in Nigeria and one of the major cities of the Niger Delta. The Local Government Area covers 260km2 and at the 2006 census held, a population of 464,789.Obio Akpor has its headquarters at Rumuodmaya.
However, Port Harcourt Nigeria is the largest city in the south after Lagos. It is referred to as the garden city because of its numerous avenues and ornaments and may sometimes be ph by local residents. It is the capital of Oil rich Rivers State.
Historically, Port Harcourt Nigeria was founded by Governor General Lord Lugard in 1912 but was named after the then British Secretary of State for the colonies, Sir Lewis Viscount Harcourt in August 1913 for a region dominated by the local Ijaw people to be a port town principally for the exportation of coal which had been discovered in the south eastern regional city of Nigeria named Enugu. Prior to 1918, the city was largely forest , farmland and fishing villages which serve as meeting point for the Agriculture and the fishing community of the neighboring Niger Delta region (Ogionwo 1979).
Shown below are the maps of Nigeria showing Rivers State and that of Rivers State map showing Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
