The Impact of Government Support towards small businesses and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
Small enterprises and entrepreneurialism are crucial to Nigeria’s economic growth. These organisations are crucial to the expansion of the economy, the alleviation of poverty, and the development of new jobs. However, several obstacles, such as a lack of resources, poor infrastructure, and restrictive regulations, limit their potential. With a focus on the numerous efforts and policies put in place to build a favourable business climate, this article investigates the effect of government assistance on small enterprises and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
The government of Nigeria has launched a number of programmes to help small companies because it recognises the vital role they play in the country’s economy. Such a programme is Nigeria’s Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN). SMEDAN was founded in 2003 and has since helped several small businesses with things like growth strategies, financing options, and policy lobbying. Many new employment and flourishing new enterprises may be directly attributed to the agency’s efforts.
The Bank of Industry (BOI), which gives small enterprises access to long-term funding, is another important programme. Businesses in the industrial, agro-processing, and IT industries have benefited greatly from the BOI’s assistance. The BOI has been essential in the development of Nigeria’s economy by making it possible for small firms to expand their operations, hence increasing employment and GDP.
The government of Nigeria has also taken the initiative to support and encourage business owners. For example, the government has launched programmes like the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) to encourage entrepreneurship. The NEIP aids company owners by providing them with resources including training, coaching, and capital.
The government also supports business owners by way of the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP). Since its beginnings, the TEEP has helped thousands of would-be company owners, resulting in the launch of countless new ventures and the creation of countless new employment.
Small enterprises and the entrepreneurial spirit in Nigeria have benefited greatly from the government’s encouragement. There has been a significant increase in employment as a direct result. Small enterprises in Nigeria, which employ over 60 million people, make up 84% of the workforce, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
