Reasons Why Labour Union go on Strike in Nigeria

Strikes by workers are a common feature of Nigeria’s economy and society. The economic and social well-being of Nigerians are severely impacted whenever the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) calls for strikes. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the myriad causes of labour strikes in Nigeria, illuminating the interplay between economic, political, and institutional issues.

The primary and most obvious cause of worker strikes in Nigeria is the constant push for higher pay and safer working conditions. As the federation of Nigerian labour unions, the NLC frequently organises strikes to demand higher salaries and better working conditions from the federal and private sectors in Nigeria. Common causes of such pressure include inflation, wage stagnation, and the perception of widening income gaps in the country.

Second, strikes in the Nigerian labour force frequently occur in response to government policies that are seen as anti-worker or harmful to the well-being of the working class. Strikes have occurred in the past for many reasons, including the elimination of fuel subsidies, the introduction of additional taxes, and the passing of new labour laws. Workers are striking in protest of initiatives they fear would harm their financial security.

As a third aspect, institutional issues have a role in the prevalence of worker strikes in Nigeria. Strikes are commonplace where there are inadequate labour laws, lax enforcement of existing rules, and no reliable channels of communication between workers, employers, and the government. Strikes are a final resort for workers who have exhausted all other means of voicing their complaints and negotiating for better working conditions.

In the end, political considerations must be taken into account. Workers’ unions can utilise strikes as a means of political bargaining, relying on the strength of their membership as a whole to sway policy choices. Most obviously, strikes have an impact on public perception and political leaders during election times.

In conclusion, there are several factors that contribute to worker strikes in Nigeria. They are a product of institutional weakness, a response to government policies, a reflection of the battle for improved salaries and working conditions, and a negotiating weapon. Promoting industrial harmony and economic stability in Nigeria requires addressing the underlying causes of worker strikes.
