1.1 Background To The Study
The fishing industry plays a significant role in the economic development and livelihoods of communities worldwide. In many regions, including Katcha town, women have been actively involved in the processing and marketing of fish, contributing to the local economy and sustaining their households.
Fishing and marketing are significant sectors in Niger State and Nigeria as a whole. Niger State, with its abundant water resources, provides a favorable environment for fishing activities. The state is home to various rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, which support a diverse range of fish species.[1] Fishing communities in Niger State, such as Agaie, Katcha, Bida, Kainji, and Shiroro, rely on fishing as a primary occupation, contributing to the local economy through employment opportunities and a source of food.
In Nigeria, fishing plays a crucial role in food security and the livelihoods of many people. It provides a valuable source of protein and essential nutrients to the population. Nigeria’s vast coastal areas, inland waters, and aquaculture facilities offer opportunities for both artisanal and commercial fishing operations.[2] The fishing industry supports numerous fishermen, fisherwomen, fish processors, and traders, contributing to rural development and poverty alleviation. According to Obasi women play a critical role in every link of the value chain in fishing, although their best-known roles are in processing and marketing of fish and other fishery products. This perception of the highly gender-segregated division of labour (men fishing/women processing) has shaped the generalized approach in supporting development initiatives for fishing.[3] More often than not, this approach targets men as fishers, and women as processors and marketers of fishery products.[4] However, this generalization has also made fisheries governance blind to women’s other valuable inputs to the sector. In fact, their roles can and should go beyond post-harvest and marketing. However, Anthonio asserted that the lack of utilization of their additional contribution has deterred, for example, women’s participation in fisheries resource management and policy decision-making.[5] Adequate participation of women in fishing has been perceived as a factor that will create opportunity for improving livelihood which is of immense benefit to the household in Katcha Town.
The role of women in small-scale fisheries also includes fostering community well-being and economic growth, increasing awareness of domestic violence, increasing attendance at school among children, and their women’s participation in local politics.
