CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The importance of human resources in an organization cannot be over Emphasized. Every organization depends more on these response for the attainment of its objective. However, objectives cannot be achieved unless the organization is made up of Employees who are also ready to commit themselves to the organization but may find it difficult to cope within their job due to many factors such as organizational changes, environment changes and technological changes.

Therefore, managers adopt manpower training and development as one of its various strategies to enhance employee’s capabilities. They are not just left to say and work until they are due for retirement but they are being trained and developed in order to increase their abilities, skill and knowledge. Experience has shown that many employees have failed in many organizations due to the fact that there was no provision made for training.

Employees are not just training for their own benefit only. The organization stands a chance and privilege to gain a lot for them. The manpower training and development is an important activity that management cannot afford to miss or play around with because not every activity can be carried out in working situation.

Manpower training and development develops the working skill and ability of workers so that they can contribute optimally to the achievement of organization goals. It is important activity that management cannot afford to miss and it is important in an organization in order to improve workers interest towards their jobs so as to increase the quality of output and also reduces accident and improves productivity.

1.1.1 Profile of Unilever PLC

Lever brothers Nigeria Plc. Is one of the longest surveying manufacturing outfit in Nigeria. The company was in corporate as a private company in 1923 to manufacture soaps based on local palm oil. William Hestetn lever halve saw in Nigeria, the potentials of the level brothers beyond the limited kingdom where he had already founded lever brothers UK.

Lever brothers Nigeria Plc. Strengthened it foothold in the food and drink business by merging with Lipton Nigeria limited in 1985 also merge with Chesa brought product industries (CPI) limited in December, 1988 to become a giant in personnel products business and lately in 1995 with unilever Nigeria limited. Presently, lever brothers Nigeria Plc operates four factories which are located Apapa which is the premises and largest site, which produces soap as sunlight, key or bar, lux, breeze, Astra and personal product such as close up, Vaseline etc.

Presently, lever brothers Nigeria Plc, is a leading company in its industry, engaged in the manufacturing and making of a wide range of household product and industrial cleaning. Lever brothers Nigeria Plc, has immensely to the training and development of manpower since its incorporation. It also employees staff strength of about 2200 in the four factory location which equally helped to induce unemployment syndrome in the country.

 

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In assessing manpower training and development as a tool for enhance productivity in the private sector, there are problem that come to mind.

The company has been facing the problems of ineffectiveness because they are not able to achieve their company’s short and long term goals due to low productivity from the workers. The company has also been facing the problem of employees obsolesce and redundancy which has resulted to a situation whereby the company can no longer cope or face environmental changes, technological and organizational, Changes around it. It has gone to the point of employees losing interest in their jobs and as a result the company has remained stagnant in improvement as the company can no longer meet its competitors.

The problem mentioned above gave arise to many problems in the company such as risk of accident being higher low improvement in quality output, loss of good will, labour turnover. Manpower training and development will go a long way in solving these mentioned above if proper attention is given. .

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objective of the study is to determine the role of training on employee performance.

The specific objectives include the following

  1. To find out the various training techniques used in organizations.
  2. To determine the process involved in training of employees.
  3. To determine the relationship between training employee skills, knowledge and abilities.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions guided this study

  1. What is the relationship between training and employee performance?
  2. What are the training techniques used in organizations?
  3. How does training affect employee’s skills, knowledge and abilities?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

For the enhancement of manpower and development to be more effective, its objective, benefits and process must be clearly understood from a utilitarian stand point.

1.6 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study on Roles of manpower training on employee performance focused on unilever Plc.

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This research work is limited by many factors and the most difficult ones are encountered in getting relevant data. Non availability of positive response from the employees is endurance and this is because most of the employees of the establishment are ignorant in many areas of their duties and this makes it a burden for the researcher to carry out a research work.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

TRAINING: The process of learning the practical side of a job. PRODUCTIVITY: The rate or efficiency of work. ORGANIZATION: A group of people working together for a purpose.

MANPOWER: The number of people available for employment. TOOL: An instrument for doing work.

DEVELOPMENT: The process or act of developing.
