CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Pupils cards processing can be seen as a continuous process of converting data (scores, grade points, credit units etc.) into a definite and meaningful information such as statement of result, transcripts etc. These results are used to check the performance of each student in various subject. A result is an official school report on the academic record of student, listing subjects offered and grades received. Pupils result is a critical component of admission, transfer credit unit processing, and graduation processing. A pupil’s result is the criteria for the measurement of the student’s capability in terms of academic work in school.

Mika’ilu Nursery and Primary School, Nasarawa Colony as an upper side especially as learners and teachers acknowledge the goals as to produce brilliant pupils. When evaluation data are seen and use as a tool, not as a weapon, the outlook becomes improvement and mystery rather than enforcement. This outlook also changes the psychological climate towards constructive progress instead of apprehension.

With the increase in the technological advancement in the most recent years, there have been rapid growths in technology and it’s have effect on humans and their businesses. (Fayad, 2008) The advent of technology helps in the utilization of computerized systems in the management of human industry.

Many teachers feel that the time they take in recording and computing for the grades of their students is time that could be better spent elsewhere, like preparing lessons, researching or meeting with their students. With the advent of computer technology, more and more schools are taking advantage of a variety of grading systems available both off-line and online that can help save time on administrative tasks and give teachers more time to attend to other important functions

Pupils report card generating system simply mean the process of computerizing a computer system to generate pupils by calculating the continuous grading of student .Grading is very important especially in academic field where manual method is been used to calculate student result computerization of student is an important development of technology where using is involved to calculate result.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In Mika’ilu Nursery and Primary School, Nasarawa Colony primary pupils are registered and school test and examination scores for each subject are collected and stored manually presently; which are also being processed manually.

The method used in evaluation of student result is time consuming.
The manual means of storing records has resulted to lose of some pupil’s scores.
The manual method has also generated unnecessary delays in processing and preparation of student statement of result.
There is improper implementation of evaluation strategy.
The whole system is inconsistent and unreliable.

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION

The study is poised towards providing answers to the following research questions

Can the software evaluate and generate student result immediately and quickly?
Does the software have enough storage that is secure and reliable?
Can the web based automatous nature of the software solve the problem of unnecessary delay of processing of student statement of result?
Can the software ensure proper implementation of evaluation strategy?
Can the software ensure the consistency and reliability of the system?

1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The main aim of this project is to develop software that will evaluate pupil’s performance by grading pupil’s based on their scores for each subject and assignment of pupil’s class average.

The project has the following objective;

Create a platform for management to register their students
Create a means for generating class reports
Enable the system efficiently store and retrieve result
Add a schema for computing student result.
To implement the above design using PHP as the front end MySQL at the background

1.5 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study is to be able to evaluate student’s performance so as to save the student, school officer from the stress of computing student performance manually which waste a lot of time during the process of computing student result to determine their performance at the end of each session.

The previous system of result compilation leads of waste of time due to the time constraint, errors and the higher number of students. The system will allow Admission Officer to register pupils into the school and the end of session school management and student are both allow to view and print their results everywhere. Teachers can easily and fast retrieved in student result, calculate the result grade, average score and status remark, exams officer comments over there class for each student. Also the form masters can generate the report of the whole class. This will be possible by developing an application that can do all of the above.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of this research is design of different web based automation of report card generating system but the researcher limited it to pupil’s subject registration, and evaluation of Student class room performance in Mika’ilu Nursery and Primary School, Nasarawa Colony, Talata Mafara. This is due to time constraint and coupled with the fact that this research work is done along with academic work.

In carrying out this research, I was faced with some limiting constraints. Designing a system software can provide all the numerous facilities as enlisted in the objectives of the study is quite a complex task especially with the fact that one is not quite efficient or skillful in the programming language of implementation and learning the short time allocated for the research work is not an easy tasks. This has limited the research work to the scope specified above.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS:

WEB–BASED: software is software you use over the internet with a web browser. You don’t have to install anything, download any software, or worry about upgrades.

DESIGN: A design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system or for the implementation of an activity or process, or the result of that plan or specification in the form of a prototype, product or process.

IMPLEMENTATION an act or instance of implementing something: the process of making something active or effective

AUTOMATED: Something that’s automated is controlled by a machine rather than a person.

PUPIL: a person who is taught by another, especially a schoolchild or student in relation to a teacher. “They are former pupils of the school”

REPORT CARDS: are designed to give parents, communities, educators and policymaker’s information about the performance of districts and schools – to celebrate success and identify areas for improvement.

REPORT GENERATING: is a computer program whose purpose is to take data from a source such as a database, XML stream or a spreadsheet, and use it to produce a document in a format which satisfies a particular human readershi
