CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The study refers to the flow of production processes in the manufacturing establishment of 7up bottling company Aba

In this study, we shall examine what the 7up bottling company Aba encounters in their attempt to the satisfaction of human wants in their production planning and control. Planning means deciding what is to be done where how and by whom it involves “scheduling” the binary of processing, assemble  and manufacturing (i.e. determining  start, completion and delivering time).

Much inch loading (i.e. assignment of work to particular machine equipment). Material availability planning (including the storage and handing 7up items) and arranging for dispatch to customers.

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In effective production planning and control depends on information about work priorities or constraints, available machinery, labor materials and about the existing workload employees in work flow are remedied.

An effective progress chaser will know at any moment in time.

What work is being done how work is done? Which machines are being used? Flow much labor is available, what raw materials and other input are currently in stock.

Interceptions may result  from non or late delivery of  material, machine break downs, staff sickness, strikes staff  lateness due to public transport difficulties computer malfunction or stock shortage breakdown in  communication  especially  between  the shop floor  and the  controlling unit  will delay production. There has to be a continuous flow of information on workload raw material availabilities surplus capacities most times  is problematic when demand for output fluctuates students often it is cheaper to  continued production during “slack period” because of set  up cost  and the  problems 7up regulating  skilled  labor following  temporary  short downs.

Activities relevant to production includes design specification of dimensions, material input quality censuring the compatibility of one component with  others, job descriptions, issuing detailed instruction to supervisor, inspections, quality control, packaging loading and dispatch production plans are implemented by control responsible for minimizing, manufacturing delays by regulatory flow of work.

1.2   STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Production planning and control is vital tool in manufacturing organization, no organization succeeds without proper production planning and control, recent time production planning and control has helped in solving    so many problems in organization both private and public organization 7up bottling company is currently faced with the following problems which necessitated the  study.

  1. Lack of effective production planning
  2. Inexperienced work force in implementing the plan
  • The company has not been effectively run as a result of wrong production planning.
    • OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
  1. To ascertain whether, the mode of operation and system of production is adequate for the 7up Bottling Company Aba.
  2. To examine effectiveness of their control system.
  • To find out inherent deficiency and to make recommendation for solving indentified problem.
  1. To come out with a realistic and sustainable propel on how idle capacities, both in human and materials resources with the enterprise could be eliminated.
  2. Finally, to possible improve and update selected methods or techniques of production in line with the recent trends.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

Answer to the question below would lead to the solution of the problems facing production planning and control in a manufacturing planning process in any establishment, which is what this project Is aimed at.

  1. In what way can the result and significance of production planning and control be identified?
  2. How many methods of production are in use in 7up Bottling Company Aba?
  • What are the major aims of production?

1.5   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work hopeful, will be useful and unavoidable guide  for future decision makers and serve as a benchmarked for further, research students in the field of  production planning and  control in manufacturing establishment especially to the 7up bottling company  Aba,  mostly  in the  production  planning control to enhance effectiveness and efficiency in their production/manufacturing process so as to meet with their customer or consumer demands of needs satisfaction.  The work will also be of benefit or recommend way by which the establishment or film could reduce production cost to the barest level in order to achieve it desire profit level or maximization the research work will mostly direct future research scholars carrying on research work on the same or related problems.

1.6  SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This research work is an indebt study of the impact of production planning and control in a manufacturing process with a case study of the 7up bottling company Aba.

1.7 LIMITATIONS

The following limitations are inherent in the study:

  1. The limitation in the use of questionnaire in term of objectively, truthfulness, and sincerity from subject are acknowledged. There is therefore the tendency for a degree of error to occur in the evaluation of data.
  2. The inability of the researcher to include all the workers in that organization, due to lack of found and time organization at the researcher’s disposal. Therefore, the finding and generalization are restricted to try manager’s middle managers and supervisor.

1.8  DEFINITION OF TERMS

Production: This is the process of co-coordinating and materials to create from raw materials physical goods and services that will satisfy human wants and need.

Production Planning: This is the regulation co-ordination and control production facilitate so as to meet a set delivery data and at  a reasonable  cost.

Production Control: This is the function of directing or regulating the orderly movement of goods through the entire manufacturing cycle firm the requisition of the raw materials to delivery to the finished production to meet the objectives of customers services, minimum inventory investment and maximum manufacturing efficiency.

Manufacturing Organization: This can be defined as any organization or arrangement that converts raw materials into finished products (input process output).

Production costs: This constitutes the aggregates of direct materials, direct, labor and factory overland cost    that have been accumulated by some material classification and allocated so as to reflect the cost involved in the production of an items.

Utility: This is the capacity to satisfy customers or human want, it is satisfaction derived from the consumption of goods and services. It is about creating value.

Scheduling: A scheduling is a program of activities to determines the production of a  particular item by specific  times, accompanied by a list of priorities and  contingencies for when things do not work out as  intended.

Machine Loading: Machine loading decisions concern which mailing (or collections of machine are to be used for which purpose and for which periods.

Capacity Planning:  This means relating to the intensity of a firm production operation to the forecast level of demand for its production.

Cost Control:  This is all effort  made to keep the actual cost  in  incurred  in line  with the  predetermined cost by the comparison of the actual cost in order that steps  many be taken to indentify if possible remove the  responsibilities factors.

Batch production:  Production which is not continuous but nevertheless repetitive is called batch production. The length production runs is finite and determined in advance hoods and produced need customers, order or of stock value to justify uninterrupted production.

Job production: Here articles are made to client’s precise specification. e.g. Are book-binding shipbuilding or the contraction of building job production is not division of building so few opportunities of scale   occur.

Continuous (Flow) Production: this is mass production   using assembly lines convey or Betts or other continuous supply systems. Mass production appropriate for standardized relatively homogenous products.
