CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background to the Study

Assessment of traffic noise pollution in Nigeria is an important topic due to the rapid urbanization and increasing traffic congestion in the country. Traffic noise pollution has become a significant environmental concern, affecting the health and well-being of the population. Several studies have been conducted to assess the levels of traffic noise pollution in different cities of Nigeria.

One study conducted by Adeyemi et al. (2017) focused on the assessment of traffic noise pollution in Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria. The study measured noise levels at different locations and found that traffic noise exceeded the recommended limits in many areas. The authors suggested the implementation of noise control measures and the development of effective traffic management strategies to mitigate the problem.

Another study by Oyedepo (2017) investigated the impact of traffic noise pollution on residential areas in Ibadan, another major city in Nigeria. The study assessed the noise levels in different residential areas and found that traffic noise exceeded the acceptable limits in most locations. The authors recommended the use of noise barriers, traffic calming measures, and stricter enforcement of noise regulations to reduce the impact of traffic noise on residents.

In addition to these studies, research has also been conducted on the effects of traffic noise pollution on human health. A study by Ologe et al. 2012) examined the association between traffic noise exposure and hypertension in a Nigerian population. The study found a positive correlation between traffic noise levels and the prevalence of hypertension, highlighting the need for effective noise control measures to protect public health.

Overall, the assessment of traffic noise pollution in Nigeria is crucial for understanding the extent of the problem and developing appropriate mitigation strategies. Further research is needed to assess the noise levels in other cities and to evaluate the long-term effects of traffic noise on the population.

1.2  Statement of the Problem

Traffic noise pollution is a growing concern in Nigeria due to rapid urbanization and increased vehicular traffic (Oyedepo, 2017). The problem arises from the excessive noise generated by vehicles on congested roads, leading to adverse effects on human health and well-being.

Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to traffic noise can result in various health issues, including sleep disturbances, cardiovascular diseases, and psychological stress. These health impacts highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of traffic noise pollution in Nigeria.

The lack of proper noise control measures and regulations exacerbates the problem of traffic noise pollution in Nigeria. The absence of noise barriers, inadequate enforcement of noise emission standards, and poor urban planning contribute to the high levels of noise pollution in urban areas.

The assessment of traffic noise pollution in Nigeria requires the collection of accurate and reliable data on noise levels, traffic patterns, and population density. This data can be obtained through the use of noise monitoring equipment, traffic surveys, and population surveys.

Additionally, the assessment should consider the impact of traffic noise on sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, and residential areas. Identifying these areas can help prioritize noise control measures and develop effective mitigation strategies.

To address the problem of traffic noise pollution in Nigeria, it is crucial to develop and implement noise control policies and regulations. These policies should focus on reducing noise emissions from vehicles, improving urban planning to minimize noise exposure, and promoting public awareness about the health risks associated with traffic noise.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study was to find out the Assessment of Traffic noise pollution in Panteker.

  1. To ascertain if perceived effect of Traffic noise pollution would influence the health of the inhabitant of Panteker of FCT Abuja.
  2. To ascertain if perceived effect of Traffic noise pollution would influence the behaviour of the inhabitant of Panteker of FCT Abuja.
  3. To examine the effect of Traffic noise pollution on cognitive development on the inhabitants of Panteker of FCT Abuja.
  4. To find out the effect of Traffic noise pollution on the blood pressure of the inhabitants of Panteker of FCT Abuja.
  5. To find out the effect of Traffic noise pollution on hypertension related problems of people living in Panteker of FCT Abuja.

1.4    Research Questions

The following questions will be answered:

  1. Will Traffic noise pollution affect the health of the inhabitant of Panteker of FCT Abuja?
  2. Will Traffic noise pollution affect the behaviour of the inhabitant of Panteker of FCT Abuja?
  3. Will Traffic noise pollution affect the cognitive development of the inhabitant of Panteker of FCT Abuja?
  4. Will Traffic noise pollution affect blood pressure of the inhabitants of Panteker of FCT Abuja?
  5. Will Traffic noise pollution cause hypertension related problems to people living in Panteker of FCT Abuja?

1.5    Research Hypotheses

The following research hypotheses formulated will be tested:

  1. Traffic noise pollution will not have significant effect on the health of the inhabitants of Panteker of FCT Abuja.

  1. Traffic noise pollution will not have significant effect on the behaviour of the inhabitants of Panteker of FCT Abuja.

  1. Traffic noise pollution will not have significant effect on the blood pressure of the inhabitants of the Panteker of FCT Abuja.

1.6    Significance of the Study

The significance of the study on the assessment of traffic noise pollution in Panteker cannot be overstated. This research holds immense importance for several reasons. Firstly, it will provide valuable insights into the levels of traffic noise pollution in different areas of Panteker. By measuring and analyzing these levels, we can identify the areas that are most affected and in need of immediate attention.

Secondly, this study aims to identify the main sources of traffic noise pollution in Panteker. By pinpointing these sources, such as busy roads or intersections, we can develop targeted strategies to mitigate the noise pollution. This will not only improve the quality of life for the residents but also contribute to the overall environmental sustainability of the city.

Thirdly, the assessment of the impact of traffic noise pollution on the health and well-being of the residents in Panteker is crucial. Excessive exposure to noise pollution has been linked to various health issues, including stress, sleep disturbances, and cardiovascular problems. By understanding the specific health effects on the residents, appropriate measures can be taken to protect their well-being.

Furthermore, this study will evaluate the effectiveness of existing noise control measures in reducing traffic noise pollution in Panteker. This evaluation is essential to determine the efficiency of current strategies and identify areas for improvement. By assessing the effectiveness, policymakers and urban planners can make informed decisions regarding noise control measures and allocate resources accordingly.

Lastly, the significance of this study lies in its potential to serve as a model for other cities facing similar challenges. The findings and recommendations from this research can be shared with other urban areas dealing with traffic noise pollution. This will facilitate knowledge exchange and promote the adoption of effective noise control measures, ultimately benefiting a larger population.

The assessment of traffic noise pollution in Panteker holds great significance for the well-being of its residents and the overall sustainability of the city. By addressing the objectives of this study, we can gain valuable insights, develop targeted strategies, protect the health of the residents, evaluate existing measures, and contribute to the broader knowledge base on noise pollution control.
