CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

According to International Labor Office Statistics, 120 million occupational accidents occur annually at workplaces worldwide. Of these, 210,000 are accidents. Every day, more than 420 men or women do not come home because they were killed by accidents at work. These are dramatic numbers which draw fairly little public attention. Considering the fact that accidents take a considerable economic toll from nations, companies and individuals, accidents do not get much publicity (John,2003) .

An accident may be described as a result of a chain of events in which something has gone wrong, resulting in an undesired conclusion. It has been shown that human intervention may prevent the injury or damage to which such a chain of events would otherwise lead. However, given the fact of human intervention, the potential exists for far more dangerous possible chains of events than those actually leading to injury or damage. These possibilities must be considered in assessing the full extent of workplace risk. Assuming that events that might lead to injury or damage occur because of factors in the workplace, one is left to conclude that the magnitude of the problem has to be determined on the basis of the existence and frequency of such factors (Cymerman, 2009).

Hotel can be defined as the establishment that provides lodging and usually meals and other services for traveler and paying guests. The hotel proprietor’s act of (1956) defined hotels as an” establishment offering food and drink and sleeping accommodation if so and able to pay for the services and facilities provided and also who is a fit a position to be served and accommodated.

According to Pitman,(2001) Advance Learners Oxford dictionary, hotels are defined as a building where people stay, usually for a short time, paying for their room and meal. Therefore, the hotel is a traffic area where people can lodge in and out, it must be safe and secure in order to prevent all accident such as fire outbreak, stealing of guest and hotel properly, this accident will be prevented by the used of safety procedures in hotel establishment.

Safety procedures in hotel establishment can be followed in order to prevent all accident, food contamination food poisoning in hotel industry for the purposes of doing all work safety and to protect both staff and guest. However, safety procedure is the terms or process or method that can be followed in order to make hotel establishment safe and unharmful/harmless. All necessary precaution must be taken in order to prevent unpleasant and unexpected event that causes damage and injury (John, 2003)

For any hotel establishment to run its business successfully, the hotelier must considered the life and properly of the guests and staff of hotel establishment, safety procedures must be followed in order to used all tools and equipment in a safe and good manner, which will neither harm themselves or those with whom they work with, also the guest accommodation can be safe and free from dangers.

The housekeepers are the persons that have major responsibilities for making sure her/his staff are familiar with the common causes of accident and procedures that prevent accident in hotel establishment (Windable,2008).

1.2    Statement of Problems

The nature of hotel organization and types of service that are being rendered on daily basis expose the hotels as area where tendency of accident is very high .Food preservation is vital but due to incompetence or carelessness by staff that can lead to food contamination and poisoning.  Also the same attitude concerning operation of machine may bring a component into a state which, for example, causes hazard to the general people in the vicinity. A technical improvement in the machinery or controls without simultaneous improvement in operators’ skills, knowledge and values may not result in improved safety. With this in mind there is need to understand safety and accident procedures in hotels.
