CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

The concept of tourism was firstly formulated in the period of between World wars and the definition put towards by the Swiss Professor, Henniker and Krapt was subsequently adapted by International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism (IAEST).

Tourism can be defined as a short term movement of people from their normal place of domicile to another place outside where they normally live and work for a period of not less than 24hours, and not more than a year. The money spend at the destination mighty have been earned from elsewhere, so therefore, people in the course of this movement from one place to another will require one service or the other as well as one facility or the other in order to make their journey successful.

  1. Tourism arises from a movement of people to, and their stay in various destinations
  2. There are two elements in all tourism, the journey to the destination and the stay including activities at the destination.
  • The journey and stay take place outside the normal place of residence and work, so that tourism gives rise to activities which are district from those of the resident and working population of the place in which tourist travel in which they stay.
  1. The movement to destinations is a temporary short term character with intention to return within a days, weeks or months.
  2. Destinations are visited for purpose other than taking up permanent residence or employment remunerate from within the place visited.

These services which a tourist need to accomplish his tour will include, transportation, accommodation, catering and entertainment. These are  basic services and facilities, many other services meet the requirement ranging from currency and documentation medical and banking services to information services and sight seeing and shopping.

Tourism in Katsina state has been operated for some years and it is still expanding, when Katsina state was created on 23rd September, 1989, there was a great need for the establishment of an agency or rather a parastatal charged with the responsibility of:

  1. Encouraging people living in Nigeria to take their holidays in Katsina state, and those in abroad
  2. To register, classify and grade all hospitality and tourism enterprises, travel agents and tour operation in such a manner as may be prescribed, and to provide advisory and information services.

Yet, with all tourist product in Katsina state, in this regards further effort, will be made towards indentifying individual tourist services and also the individual providers of these services and facilities in the state. Hence, when this is done, the problems confronting each of them will be recognized and consequently to suggest some remedies to each of the problems respectively.

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

There are many constraints of tourism in Katsina state, that are confronting tourism service, the problems usually retard the enjoyment of tourism in terms of facilities and services. The research work is set to find out the constraints of tourism and ways of solving the problems in Katsina state.

Moreover, the aim of this research is to promote learning and to encourage and motivate further discussion so as to further examine some of  the problems, it should also serve as a  base or foundation over  which new ideas concerning the problems confronting the operation of tourism and ways in which we can take this problems. Katsina is a developing state with Hausa and Fulani as its major resident who are mostly ignorant of what tourism is all about, so they need awareness on this.

Tourism is an important event which helps the national grow rapidly, in Nigeria tourism is playing a very good role in the progress of the country in general.

Despite its importance and its contribution, here in Katsina state it is not practiced due to one reason or the other. The  significance of the study is to enlighten people on the importance of tourism and the contribution it is given, which in turn is boosting the economy and also minimizing unemployment, which has become a  serious problems in the lives of the Nigerian youth.

There is a  saying which says “pictures keep memories alive” so also to tourism because it is just like a picture to us. For example, the Gobarau minaret which is believed to be built more than 600years ago, another importance of the study is to promote learning of the student both the pupils and those in the advanced level or higher institutions, because excursion is very vital, most especially for the pupils in the primary schools. For the students of high institutions tourism would help the in making their research work.

The study highlighted some problems confronting the operation of tourism in Katsina and some possible ways of tackling the problems, and also some important tourism destinations.

1.6   LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Generally the research work will not go beyond Katsina state this is a result of financial problems and time which is limited.

Moreover, the governments of Katsina are not encouraging students because the less privilege well is waiting for state scholarship which use to come very late after we must have finished all the project, so these is a problems to almost all the students in Katsina State.
