What is a Coup or Coup d’état? Explain

A coup, or coup d’état, is a swift and unexpected political action, often one that results in a change of government by unlawful or violent means. It was originally the French expression “coup d’état,” which meant “stroke of state” or “blow against the state.” This political phenomena has been around for millennia, influencing history in many ways.

A coup d’etat is the violent removal of an elected government by an elite group of people, generally the military. The ultimate goal of every coup is to assume complete command of the government and all of its institutions. Discontent with the present system, a thirst for power, economic instability, or ideological disagreements can all contribute to a coup’s success.

Not all coups involve violence. Coups d’état violents typically include the use of military force, violence, and casualties. The peaceful transfer of power via strategic manoeuvring and political intrigue are examples of non-violent coups. But regardless of the form of the coup that took place, its aftermath usually ushers in a time of unpredictability and instability.

A country may never recover from the effects of a coup d’état. Disruption of social order, economic instability, and even civil war are all possible outcomes. Of course, not every coup ends badly. Some have resulted in desirable outcomes, such as the fall of authoritarian governments and the installation of democratic ones.

A coup d’état, in a nutshell, is the orchestrated overthrow of an established government, often by a small group of individuals. While the immediate goal of a coup is to gain power of the state, the long-term effects might differ greatly depending on the nature of the coup and the political, social, and economic context in which it happens. To fully grasp the complexity of political power struggles and their influence on a nation’s past and future, it is essential to have a firm grasp of the mechanics of a coup.
