HISTORY OF EDUCATION IN ZAMBIA

Zambia’s educational history is both rich and interesting. Before colonialism, the majority of Zambians had an informal education that emphasized the development of traditional skills and knowledge. However, when European conquerors arrived in the late 19th century, they brought with them standardized schooling.

Christian missionaries, who regarded education as a vehicle to propagate Christianity and their culture, founded the first official schools in Zambia. Many of these schools practiced racial and gender segregation, with European and African pupils attending separate, less-successful schools.

After gaining its independence from Britain in 1964, Zambia’s administration made improving the country’s educational system a top priority. The government instituted a national education system with the intention of making schooling for all children up to the age of 16 obligatory and free.
