CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria has been a subject of interest in recent years. According to Ogunniyi (2015), the integration of technology in sports education has significantly improved the performance of students in various sports activities. The authors argue that technology provides a platform for students to learn and understand the dynamics of different sports, thereby enhancing their performance. For instance, video analysis software allows students to analyze their performance and identify areas that need improvement.

Moreover, a study by Ajibua and Momoh (2010), revealed that the use of fitness tracking devices among secondary school students in Nigeria has led to improved physical fitness, which is a key aspect of sports performance. These devices enable students to monitor their heart rate, calories burned, steps taken, and sleep patterns, among other things. By understanding their physical fitness levels, students can make necessary adjustments to their training programs to improve their performance.

In addition, the use of virtual reality (VR) in sports education has also been found to enhance sports performance among secondary school students in Nigeria (Okebukola, 2019). VR provides a realistic and immersive learning environment where students can practice different sports activities without the risk of physical injuries. This not only improves their skills but also boosts their confidence.

However, despite the potential benefits of technology in enhancing sports performance, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. According to a study by Oyeyemi et al. (2020), the lack of adequate technological infrastructure and the high cost of technology are some of the barriers to the effective integration of technology in sports education in Nigeria. The authors recommend increased investment in technological infrastructure and training of sports teachers on the use of technology.

Furthermore, there is also a need for more research on the impact of technology on sports performance among secondary school students in Nigeria. As noted by Akinola (2021), most of the existing studies focus on the use of technology in sports education in general, with little attention to its impact on sports performance. Therefore, future research should focus on this area to provide more evidence on the effectiveness of technology in enhancing sports performance.

In conclusion, technology plays a crucial role in enhancing sports performance among secondary school students in Nigeria. However, for its full potential to be realized, there is a need for increased investment in technological infrastructure, training of sports teachers on the use of technology, and more research on its impact on sports performance.

  • Statement of the Problem

The problem of enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria is a significant one. Despite the country’s rich sporting history and potential, many secondary school students are not reaching their full potential due to a lack of access to and understanding of modern technology that could enhance their performance (Adeyanju, 2017).

The use of technology in sports is a global trend that has been shown to improve performance, reduce injuries, and increase engagement in physical activities (Smith, 2019). However, in Nigeria, there is a significant gap in the adoption and utilization of these technologies in secondary schools. This is due to a variety of factors, including lack of funding, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of awareness about the benefits of technology in sports (Ojo, 2020).

Furthermore, there is a lack of research on the impact of technology on sports performance in Nigerian secondary schools. Most studies have focused on developed countries, leaving a gap in the literature on developing countries like Nigeria (Adeyanju, 2017). This lack of research makes it difficult to understand the specific needs and challenges of Nigerian students and to develop effective interventions.

The problem is further compounded by the fact that many teachers and coaches in Nigerian secondary schools are not adequately trained to use technology in sports. This lack of training can lead to a lack of confidence in using technology, which in turn can hinder its adoption (Ojo, 2020).

The role of technology in enhancing sport performance among secondary school students in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires further research. Addressing this problem could have significant implications for the development of sports in Nigeria and for the health and well-being of Nigerian students.
