The relationship between Poverty and Insecurity in Africa
Despite its wealth of natural riches and cultural variety, Africa has struggled for decades with poverty and instability. These two problems feed off of one another, creating a virtuous loop that slows progress on the continent. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the link between poverty and insecurity in Africa, looking at their origins, consequences, and potential remedies.
Extreme poverty, or poverty by any standard, is a widespread issue across the African continent. More than 40 percent of people in Sub-Saharan Africa are living below the poverty line, according to the World Bank. There is a causal relationship between the region’s dismal economic position and its high level of insecurity. To be vulnerable to harm or threat; to be unprotected is to be in a condition of insecurity. Political and social upheaval, civil strife, war, terrorism, and criminal activity are all examples of this phenomenon.
The causes and effects of poverty and insecurity are intricately intertwined. For one thing, being poor often means feeling unsafe. The young unemployment rate is disproportionately high in countries with high poverty levels. This underemployed and disenchanted segment of the population is especially vulnerable to radicalization and crime, both of which threaten national security. Additionally, rivalry over limited resources can spark unrest and destabilise governments among the poor.
However, poverty may also be a result of feeling unsafe. Economic activity are frequently hindered in war-torn and unstable environments. Damage to infrastructure, loss of investment, and upheaval in the labour force are all consequences. As a result, the economy suffers and poverty rises. On top of that, governments in these areas frequently spend a disproportionate share of their budget on security and defence, leaving little room for social services and development initiatives.
As a result, it’s safe to say that Africa’s poverty and insecurity are interconnected. It will need a holistic and coordinated strategy to end this cycle. These should consist of both peacebuilding initiatives and economic measures that aim to reduce poverty, such as the development of jobs and increased income. In addition, sustainable development in Africa requires attending to fundamental problems including corruption, weak governance, and inequality.
