The Impact of Over Population on the Sustainability of Nigeria Economy

The term “overpopulation” is used to describe when there are more people living in a region than there are resources and facilities to sustain them. As the most populated country in Africa, Nigeria is struggling under the weight of its large population and the consequences for the economy.

Overpopulation has a major effect on the Nigerian economy because of the strain it places on the country’s resources. The need for food, water, shelter, and other requirements rises in tandem with the population. Overuse of land and natural resources is a risk when there is increased demand on the agriculture sector to increase food production. Deforestation and biodiversity loss are further consequences of the growing metropolitan areas brought about by the rising demand for housing.

There is evidence that unemployment and poverty are both exacerbated by population growth. Nigeria has a high unemployment rate because of the big population fighting for few available jobs. Individuals and families aren’t the only ones this impacts; the economy as a whole feels the effects, too. Unrest, criminality, and lower output are all possible results of persistently high unemployment rates.

The strain on Nigeria’s already-overburdened infrastructure is another major consequence of the country’s rapid population growth. The increasing number of people calls for an increase in infrastructure like schools, hospitals, and highways. However, it’s possible that the current system won’t be able to keep up with the rising number of people needing services like healthcare, transportation, and classroom instruction. Economic growth and possibilities for personal betterment might both suffer as a result of this.

There are a number of options available to mitigate the effects of population growth on Nigeria’s economy. First, there should be more robust family planning programmes to rein down rising population numbers. The benefits of having a smaller family may be better communicated and understood, and education and access to contraception can help make that happen. Investments in infrastructure development, such as better transport networks and more access to education and healthcare, can also reduce the demand on current services.

The negative effects of overpopulation on the environment can be lessened via the adoption of sustainable agricultural and energy practises. Sustainable practises might include advocating for organic farming, alternative energy, and environmental preservation. Policies that facilitate the production of new jobs and the diversification of the economy can also play a role in lowering the unemployment and poverty rates.

In sum, Nigeria’s economy will not be able to survive if the country continues to experience rapid population growth. It’s a demand on resources, causes poverty and joblessness, and tests the limits of the current infrastructure. The ecosystem suffers as a result, too. However, these difficulties may be overcome with the use of sustainable practises, including family planning and the construction of necessary infrastructure. Nigeria can ensure a stable and thriving economy for its rapidly expanding population by taking the necessary steps now.
