INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Bureaucratic corruption is a significant issue that affects service delivery in public institutions in Nigeria. According to Ogbeidi (2012), corruption in Nigeria’s public sector has been a persistent problem since the country’s independence. This corruption manifests in various forms, including bribery, embezzlement, nepotism, and fraud, all of which have a detrimental impact on the quality and efficiency of public services. The author further notes that corruption has led to the misappropriation of public funds, resulting in inadequate resources for service delivery.

The effect of bureaucratic corruption on service delivery is particularly evident in the healthcare sector. Uzochukwu et al. Bureaucratic corruption poses a significant challenge to service delivery in public institutions in Nigeria. It leads to the misappropriation of public funds, affects the quality and efficiency of public services, and hampers economic development. Therefore, there is a need for more effective anti-corruption measures to curb this problem and improve service delivery in public institutions.

• Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the effect of bureaucratic corruption on service delivery on public institution. The specific objectives are:

1. To examine the effect of bureaucratic corruption in public institutions in Nigeria.
2. To find out the impact of bureaucratic corruption on service delivery.
3. To assess the mechanisms that can combat bureaucratic corruption in public institutions.
4. To examine the relationship between bureaucratic corruption and the quality-of-service delivery in public institutions.

 Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. What is the effect of bureaucratic corruption in public institutions in Nigeria?
2. What is the impact of bureaucratic corruption on service delivery in these institutions?
3. What mechanisms can be implemented to combat bureaucratic corruption in public institutions?
4. Is there a relationship between bureaucratic corruption and the quality-of-service delivery in public institutions?

• Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement is buttressed below:

 Significance of the Study

The study of the effect of bureaucratic corruption on service delivery in public institutions is of great significance for several reasons. Firstly, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the extent and impact of bureaucratic corruption in public institutions, particularly in Nigeria. This understanding is crucial in formulating effective policies and strategies to combat corruption and improve service delivery.

• Scope of the Study

The study examines the effect of bureaucratic corruption on service delivery on public institution. The study is limited to selected Public Institution in Nigeria.

• Operational Definition of Terms

“Effect” generally refers to a change that is a result or consequence of an action or other cause. In the context of this study, it refers to the outcomes or consequences that bureaucratic corruption has on service delivery in public institutions.

“Bureaucratic corruption” is a form of corruption that occurs within the administrative structure of a government or organization. It involves the misuse of public office for private gain, such as bribery, embezzlement, nepotism, and fraud. This type of corruption can significantly hinder the efficiency and effectiveness of public institutions.

“Service delivery” refers to the act of providing a service to the public. In the context of public institutions, it involves the provision of public goods or services, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, to the citizens.
