Full Project – THE USE OF PICTORIAL IMAGES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING DURING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.
A STUDY SELECTED PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN SURULERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT, LAGOS
1.1 Background to the Study
It is generally agreed that using visuals to help young children learn is an efficient way to increase their interest and comprehension. Numerous studies have shown that the use of visual aids like drawings, diagrams, and illustrations greatly increases students’ ability to understand and remember material.
Using visuals is useful because it enables young children to better relate theoretical ideas to concrete examples. A youngster may learn the meaning of “tree” more readily from a picture than from an explanation of the idea alone. Children are better able to comprehend and retain the material thanks to this visual aid (Thompson, 2014).
Children’s creativity and imagination may be sparked by pictures as well. Teachers can inspire kids to think deeply and articulate their ideas by providing them with visual prompts. Using visuals in this way may improve comprehension and encourage the development of higher-level reasoning abilities (Chi, 2001).
In addition, children with a variety of learning styles and skills may benefit greatly from the use of visual representations. People who are more visual in their learning style, for example, benefit more from the use of visual aids. HO: Pictorial images does not enhance the understanding of early childhood learners.

1.7 Scope of the study / Delimitation
The scope of this study is delimited to assessing the use of pictorial images in teaching and learning during early childhood education. The area covered by this study is selected pre-primary Schools in Surulere Local Government, Lagos.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Pictorial images: Pictorial images refer to visual representations or illustrations that convey information or ideas through pictures or graphics. These images can include photographs, drawings, diagrams, charts, or any other visual medium that aids in understanding or communication.
- Teaching: Teaching is the process of imparting knowledge, skills, or information to others. It involves the deliberate and systematic transmission of information from a teacher or educator to a learner or student. Teaching can take place in various settings, such as classrooms, online platforms, or informal learning environments.
- Learning: Learning is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, or behaviors through study, experience, or teaching. It is a complex process that involves the active engagement of learners in acquiring, processing, and applying new information or skills.
