ABSTRACT

The research is on the role of Christian education in addressing Illiteracy and its implications on church growth. Church growth is both spiritual and physical. Christian education is pivotal to any form of church growth. Illiteracy has a great impact on the life of an individual and the church. There is high level of illiteracy in the riverine communities which are caused by certain factors. No society exists without education. Education is not only associated with Christian religion. Every religion has one form of education or the other. The aim, content and methods of traditional African education are intricately interwoven; they are not divided into separate compartments as is the case with Western system of education. Bomadi missionary zone was inaugurated on 14th August, 2011. The methodology utilized is the combination of library and fieldwork. Books and the internet were used for the library work, while questionnaires were administered and interviews were conducted. The activities of Christian education in Bomadi missionary zone have the adult education, Sunday school, home fellowship, Bible studies, camping, seminars, use of English language in preaching/teaching, use of Pidgin English in preaching/teaching, and interpretation to Ijaw Language. The effects of illiteracy on the churches include evangelism, lack of Sunday school teacher, lack of church leaders and workers, and spiritual and physical growth. The Christian education ministries helped to improve the ability of 61.90% respondents to read, 59.52% respondents to understand and speak, and 61.90% respondents to know how to write in English language. In view of the findings, Christian education is tool in addressing illiteracy. Based on research findings and conclusions, the research recommends that there should be continuous trainings for pastors and church workers for better performance. Secondly, further research should be conducted by other scholars on the role Christian education in addressing illiteracy to contribute to the subject in order to provide more findings.
