- Background to the Study
The impact of laboratory work in the teaching and learning of chemistry in Nigeria has been a subject of significant research and discussion. According to Okebukola (1986), laboratory work is a crucial component of chemistry education, as it provides students with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of chemical concepts. This is particularly important in Nigeria, where the education system has traditionally been lecture-based, and practical application of knowledge has often been overlooked. Okebukola’s study found that students who participated in laboratory work had a better understanding of chemistry concepts and were more likely to pursue careers in the field.
In a more recent study, Aina and Akintunde (2013) found that laboratory work also has a positive impact on students’ attitudes towards chemistry. Future research should focus on identifying effective strategies for overcoming these challenges and maximizing the benefits of laboratory work in chemistry education in Nigeria.

The study aim is to examine the impact of laboratory in the teaching and learning of chemistry in Prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba in Kogi State. The specific objectives are:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of laboratory-based learning in enhancing students’ understanding of complex chemistry.
- To assess the role of laboratory experiments in fostering students’ practical skills.
- To investigate the impact of laboratory work on students’ interest and engagement in chemistry.
- To explore the potential benefits and challenges of integrating more laboratory work into the chemistry curriculum.
1.4. Research Questions
The research questions are buttressed below:
- How effective is laboratory-based learning in enhancing students’ understanding of complex chemistry concepts?
- What role do laboratory experiments play in fostering students’ practical skills in chemistry?
- What is the impact of laboratory work on students’ interest and engagement in chemistry?
- What are the potential benefits and challenges of integrating more laboratory work into the chemistry curriculum?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The hypothetical statement for the study is stated below:
Ho: Effective laboratory-based learning will not enhance students’ understanding of complex chemistry.
H1: Effective laboratory-based learning will enhance students’ understanding of complex chemistry.

The study examines the impact of laboratory in the teaching and learning of chemistry in Prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba in Kogi State. The study is restricted to the institution under study.
