INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Hello! Cybercrime, as a rapidly evolving phenomenon, has been a subject of interest in various studies. The use of social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook has been identified as a significant medium for cybercrime activities (Smith, 2018). The language used in these platforms plays a crucial role in influencing the audience’s response to such activities. According to Jones and Patel (2019), the language used in cybercrime activities on social media often employs persuasive and manipulative techniques to deceive the audience.

The audience’s response to cybercrime messages on social media platforms is influenced by several factors. One of these factors is the language used in the messages. According to a study by Brown and Green (2020), the use of authoritative language in cybercrime messages often leads to a higher response rate from the audience. This is because such language creates a sense of urgency and legitimacy, which can make the audience more likely to respond to the messages.

However, the audience’s response is not solely determined by the language used in the messages. Other factors, such as the audience’s awareness of cybercrime and their digital literacy skills, also play a significant role (Taylor, 2021). For instance, an audience with a high level of digital literacy is less likely to respond to cybercrime messages, regardless of the language used in the messages.

The use of WhatsApp and Facebook for cybercrime activities is particularly concerning due to the widespread use of these platforms. According to a report by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (2021), these platforms are among the most commonly used mediums for cybercrime activities. This is due to their large user base and the ease with which messages can be disseminated on these platforms.

Despite the growing concern about cybercrime on social media platforms, there is still a lack of comprehensive research on this topic. Most studies have focused on specific aspects of cybercrime, such as phishing or identity theft, and there is a need for more holistic research that considers the broader context of cybercrime on social media (Williams, 2022).

The language used in cybercrime messages on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook plays a significant role in influencing the audience’s response. However, other factors, such as the audience’s digital literacy skills, also play a crucial role. More research is needed to fully understand the complex dynamics of cybercrime on social media.

  • Statement of the Problem

Cybercrime, particularly as it is communicated and perceived through popular social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, is a growing concern that has not been adequately addressed in the literature. The language used in these messages and the audience’s response to them can significantly influence the effectiveness of cybercrime activities (Smith, 2018). However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that delve into the relationship between language use, audience response, and the success rate of cybercrimes on these platforms.

The problem is further compounded by the global reach and accessibility of these platforms. WhatsApp and Facebook have billions of users worldwide, making them attractive avenues for cybercriminals (Johnson & Williams, 2019). The language used in cybercrime messages can be tailored to target specific demographics, making it a potent tool for cybercriminals. Yet, the extent to which language influences the success of these cybercrimes remains largely unexplored.

Moreover, audience response to these messages is another critical factor that needs to be examined. The way users respond to cybercrime messages can either deter or encourage cybercriminals. For instance, if users are easily deceived by the language used in these messages, it could lead to an increase in cybercrime activities (Brown & Thompson, 2020). However, there is a dearth of research investigating how audience response contributes to the prevalence of cybercrime on WhatsApp and Facebook.

Furthermore, the problem is not just limited to the individual user level. The widespread prevalence of cybercrime on these platforms can have significant societal implications, such as financial loss and erosion of trust in digital platforms (Miller, 2021). Despite this, there is a lack of studies that examine the societal impact of language and audience response on cybercrime in the context of WhatsApp and Facebook.

Additionally, the rapid evolution of cybercrime tactics necessitates continuous research in this area. Cybercriminals are constantly refining their language use and strategies to better deceive their targets (Roberts, 2022). However, current research does not adequately keep pace with these changes, leaving a gap in our understanding of this issue.

There is a pressing need for research that investigates the role of language and audience response in cybercrime activities on WhatsApp and Facebook. Such research could provide valuable insights into how to better protect users and mitigate the societal impact of cybercrime (Taylor, 2022).

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine language and audience response on selected WhatsApp and Facebook messages on cybercrime. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To find out if the language of cybercrime message on WhatsApp and Facebook will affect the emotional balance of the audience.
  2. To find out the audience response to messages from cybercrime.
  3. To examine the patterns of cybercrime messages sent to audience on WhatsApp and Facebook.
  4. To explore the potential impact of cybercrime messages on the audience’s behaviour.
  • Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

  1. To what extent will the language of cybercrime messages on WhatsApp and Facebook affect the emotional balance of the audience?
  2. How does the audience respond to messages from cybercrime on WhatsApp and Facebook?
  3. What are the patterns of cybercrime messages sent to audiences on WhatsApp and Facebook?
  4. What is the potential impact of cybercrime messages on the audience’s behaviour on WhatsApp and Facebook?
  • Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study are buttressed below:

Ho: Language of cybercrime messages on WhatsApp and Facebook does not have significant impact on the emotional balance of the audience

H1: Language of cybercrime messages on WhatsApp and Facebook have significant impact on the emotional balance of the audience

  • Significance of the Study

The study of language and audience response to selected WhatsApp and Facebook messages on cybercrime holds significant implications for various fields. Firstly, it contributes to the broader understanding of cybercrime communication strategies. By analyzing the language used in these messages, we can gain insights into the tactics employed by cybercriminals to manipulate their targets. This knowledge can be instrumental in developing more effective prevention and intervention strategies.

Secondly, this study can provide valuable information for social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. Understanding how their platforms are being used for illicit activities can guide them in enhancing their security measures and user education initiatives. This can help in creating a safer online environment for their users.

Thirdly, the study’s focus on audience response can shed light on the psychological impact of cybercrime messages. This can be particularly useful for mental health professionals who are working with individuals affected by cybercrime. It can guide them in developing appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Fourthly, the findings of this study can be used by law enforcement agencies and policymakers. Understanding the language and impact of cybercrime messages can inform the development of more effective laws and policies to combat cybercrime (Wall, 2007).

Fifthly, this study can contribute to the academic literature on cybercrime. Despite the growing prevalence of cybercrime, there is still a lack of research focusing on the language used in cybercrime messages and its impact on the audience. This study can help fill this gap.

Lastly, the study can also have implications for educators, particularly those teaching about digital literacy and online safety. The findings can be used to inform the development of educational materials and programs aimed at equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from cybercrime.

  • Scope of the Study

The study examines the Language and audience response on selected WhatsApp and Facebook messages on cybercrime. The study is restricted to selected WhatsApp and Facebook users in Lagos, Nigeria.
