INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

Students’ academic success at public high schools depends greatly on the quality of the school’s learning environment. Students’ motivation, interest, and performance improve in classrooms when such factors are prioritized.

On the other side, a hostile classroom setting can have a chilling effect on students and their ability to study. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and investigate the characteristics that contribute to making public high schools a productive learning environment that encourages academic achievement. This literature study will focus on the elements that lead to a healthy learning environment in public high schools, as they relate to students’ academic success. Students’ Academic Achievement as Impacted by Their Classroom Environment The academic success of pupils can benefit greatly from a supportive classroom setting.

Broussard and Garrison (2004) state that the term “learning environment” refers to the whole of the factors—physical, social, and cultural—that influence students’ time spent in school. A good learning environment features high standards for all students, relevant and engaging teaching practices, and an atmosphere of mutual respect and support for one another.

Hossain, Ashraf, and Rahman (2017) argue that the physical setting has a significant impact on the quality of the classroom experience. Classroom design, lighting, temperature, and noise all have a substantial impact on kids’ ability to study and succeed in school. So, schools should make an effort to construct classrooms with suitable physical environments by providing sufficient lighting, temperature regulation, and space to move around. The school’s social climate is also an important determinant of student success.

Positive student-to-student and teacher-to-student connections have been shown to increase academic success (Ruef et al., 2017). Students who get along well with their instructors and classmates are more likely to raise their hands in class, ask clarifying questions, and raise their hands for assistance when they need it. Therefore, it is the responsibility of educators to cultivate a healthy classroom atmosphere that encourages kids to work together and welcomes diversity.

There are many factors beyond the physical classroom that contribute to a student’s performance in school. Adeoye and Adebiyi (2020) argue that a healthy learning environment may be fostered when teachers are culturally sensitive, understand, and embrace the cultural backgrounds of their pupils. Inclusion is fostered and kids’ voices are heard and appreciated in such an atmosphere. Engaging teaching practices are essential for improving academic performance alongside physical, social, and cultural elements.

Taber (2019) argues that student-centered teaching methods including project-based learning, cooperative learning, and inquiry-based education may increase students’ interest in school, their drive to study, and their overall performance in class. Teachers should make it a priority to use tactics that put students at the center of the learning process and encourage both active participation and analytical thought. Conclusion In public high schools, the learning environment has a significant impact on students’ success in the classroom.

Students are more likely to succeed in school when they are immersed in an encouraging and welcoming classroom atmosphere that values diversity and encourages open dialogue among all members of the learning community. Therefore, schools and teachers should work to foster an atmosphere that encourages growth mindsets and encourages kids to reach their full academic potential.

Physical, biological, or chemical agents can all be part of a school’s learning environment, which also includes factors like noise, temperature, and lighting (Chiu 1991). The whole of the interaction between students and teachers may be thought of as the learning environment. Teaching and learning take place in what is called the “learning environment,” which consists of the natural and artificial surroundings. According to Maduewesi (1990), “the teaching and learning environment is the physical and conceptual setting in which teaching and learning are carried out as deliberately planned.” According to Okobia in Maduewesi (1990), a classroom’s learning environment consists of the classroom’s atmosphere, the classroom’s physical amenities, and the teacher-student connection.

Statement of the problem

Students’ academic success in public high schools relies heavily on the caliber of the school’s learning environments. The physical learning environment in many public schools in Nigeria is suboptimal, which may explain why many of the country’s kids are performing badly academically. Compounding the issue of an insufficient learning environment are factors like overcrowded classrooms, unskilled teachers, and a lack of appropriate study places. As a result, pupils at public high schools are not performing well academically. So, it’s important to look at how the school setting affects students’ grades in Nigeria’s public high schools.

The problem under study has to do with an unsatisfactory condition of the educational system being operated in Nigeria. The establishment of government schools/community schools has resulted in a situation where by some school were favoured in terms of the provision of rich environment than others. It has been very difficult if not impossible for government to standardize the learning environment. Thus the environment varies from school to school.

Some schools have adequate school buildings, good library and suitable textbooks, good administrative management, professionally qualified teachers, good laboratory equipments as well as good environment. While in some schools little or none of these exist. It is because of this that Chike-Okoli (1997) in line with Ikediashi (2002) have pointed out that poor teaching experience, inadequate or poor physical infrastructure, unsatisfactory building design are likely to cause some physical discomfort for the students and are therefore bound to influence their academic performance . The problem of this study put in a question form is: What is the influence of school facilities and equipment on the student performance in secondary schools in Nasarawa State?

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of the study is to determine the Influence of learning environment on academic performance of secondary school students in Nasarawa State.

Specifically the study intends to:

  • Examine the quality effect of Learning Environment on student academic performance in public secondary school in Nasarawa State

  • Find out the effect of library services on student performance in secondary schools in Nasarawa State.

  • Find out the extent learning environment affect student’s academic performance of public secondary schools.

  • Ascertain the  extents  the  school  facilities  affect  students

academic performance  of public secondary schools.

Research questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. To what extent will the quality effect of Learning Environment affect student academic performance in public secondary school in Nasarawa State

  1. To what extent do the library services affect the academic performance s of students of public secondary schools?

  1. How does learning environment affect academic performance s of students of public secondary schools?

  1. To what extent do the school facilities affect students’ academic

performances of public secondary schools?

Hypotheses

Two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and will be tested at 0.05 level of significant.

HO1: There is no significant difference between the mean ratings of teachers in urban and those in rural school on the extent school building affect the performances of students of public secondary schools.

HO2: Male and female teachers do not differ significantly in their mean ratings with regard to the extent school facilities affect students’ academic performance.

Significance of the study

The study will provide the school principals the opportunity to improve in school supervision so as to ensure both quality teaching and learning in the schools. It will enable them appreciate the contribution of school facilities and equipment on students academic performance . The findings will enable the teachers to appreciate the need for proper instructional delivery. It will help the teacher to improve both in teaching effectiveness and increased productivity in the schools.

It will help the parents in determining the choice of the type of school for their children. This is because, their wards will enjoy good school learning environment that will lead to quality school products. Finally, it will be of benefit to the student researchers as it will provide a valid working document or literature in investigating other areas not covered by this study. Thus, it will serve as a point of reference to future researchers in the field.

Scope of the study

The study is delimited to the Influence of learning environment on students academic performance in public senior secondary school in Keffi local government area of Nasarawa State. The content area covers school building, library services, learning environment and school facilities.
