CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

Cooperative society is an organization of group of people with collective responsibilities and thoughts for the development of needy, especially under privileged. “A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise”. It is based on the values of the development of agriculture, forestry, banking, credit, agro-processing, storage, marketing, dairy, fishing and housing and its network covers 85 percent of rural households. It occupies a key position in agricultural development with support in resource and input use, harvesting of water resources, marketing channels, storage facilities, distribution channels, value addition, market information and a regular monitoring network system. Cooperatives are also engaged in economic activities like disbursement of credit, distribution of agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals etc).

Cooperatives have inherent advantages in tackling the problems of poverty alleviation, food security and employment generation. It is considered to have immense potential to deliver goods and services in areas where both the public and private sector have failed. By and large, cooperatives (except a few large ones) are “local institutions”, addressing “local needs”, employing “local talent”, and led by “local leaders”. A situation is emerging wherein there is a possibility of people migrating back to rural areas, as the cooperatives exhibit vast potential for generating self-employment opportunities at grassroots.

Since its formal launch in 1904 in India, the India cooperative movement has played very important role in the Indian economy especially in the development of the agriculture and rural sectors combining the strengths of both public and private sector specially in supporting the small and marginal farmers and weaker sections. Immediately after independence in 1947, the cooperative sector was recognized by the government as a third economic sector to serve as a balancing factor between the private and public sectors. The government had even considered the cooperative sector as a ‘cooperative common wealth’. In this way cooperatives developed as a special sector combining the strengths of both the public and private sectors, especially serving the needs of small and marginal farmers and weaker groups. At present it is the largest movement in the world.

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Despite the efforts being made by the government at federal, local levels towards boosting pig produce, employee. That is co-operators and there low productivity their still persist pigs in country. Membership growth is more rapid than pig growth and this has shapely reduced the per capital benefits of increased piggery production and the associated increase and income.

In general land spreading has been used as a key disposal route for livestock manures from the installations although in Scotland most broiler liters have been utilized in the production of mushroom compost.

Many freshwaters in Northern Nigeria and some in Scotland are highly entropic and soils in many areas have high phosphate levels. Producers will in some cases be constrained by the amount of land available for spreading with livestock manures will need to be employed especially in Nigeria as well as Abia State livestock production.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Nigeria has embarked on various programmes and government regulation costing million of hundreds of naira aimed at relieving or preventing diseases on livestock production. (pigs production).

Outdoor pig farming may increase the incidence of worms and parasites in pigs management of these problems depends on local conditions, such as geography climate, and the availability of skilled staff. This call for urgent re-examination on these piggeries production on cooperative societies in increasing piggery production since its aim of facilitating the attainment of self-sufficiency in livestock production and making piggery production to take its prime position in the national economy of this country and this state in particular is in danger.

1.3  OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The research work is designed to increasing the piggery production through the activities of cooperatives societies in Abia State livestock production. In the light of finding to recommend how the contribution of cooperatives societies in livestock production can be improved.

The general purpose of this research report is to undertake a study of existing cooperative productive system and their effect on improving the development of piggery production specifically. The study has the following objectives.

  • To examine the impact of the pig producers in cooperative societies.
  • To review the environment impact of current disposal practices involving the identification of the key environmental issues and activity data for each current practice, including products arising from any downstream processing.
  • Prepare an inventory of past and current research and techniques employed in other countries in Europe and further a field, with a focus on successful techniques.
  • To determine and invest, gate the problems facing the piggery production in cooperative societies.

1.4  SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study will attempt to examine the regulation of Abia State cooperative societies on piggery productivity development which are over changing and the important of putting together of our small scale farming system for increased pork meat production the constraint in achieving the improvement in piggery production and proffering of possible solutions to overcome them shall also be examined in the project report.

1.5  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

piggery production as parts of agriculture sector in cooperative society is important as it contribute in sustaining any economy bringing together the livestock production sector hence forth any effort geared at carrying out research aimed at improving the piggery production (livestock) production. Should be considered worthwhile and nay suggestion on the improvement of livestock production/piggery production on cooperative society should have bearing appropriate time to study the livestock production sector considering the prevailing economic condition of Abia State.

Presently, our employees/workers cooperatives are adequately remunerated despite the fact that they bend over double trying to make the state self-sufficient/self employment and self reliant in piggery production for the fact that they are organized through cooperatives, increased productivity will enhance the profit maximization on them, them piggery production will once more look attractive in the state.

Based on the findings of the study and the suggestion proffered, it is strongly believed that government would encourage peasant people to join the cooperative society.

Moreover, healthy programmes and policies on cooperative organization should be mounted, it will enable the managers of cooperative organizations to adequately organize the cooperative society for increased pork meat production as well as food value such as protein, vitamin etc.

Furthermore, colleges of cooperative, schools and researchers who wish to carry out research. In this field have been provided as spring board from where they can take off.
