Chapter One:

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Seasonal variation has been identified as a significant factor affecting teaching and learning in secondary schools in Nigeria. According to Adebayo (2017), the rainy and dry seasons in Nigeria have a direct impact on school attendance rates, especially in rural areas. During the rainy season, many students are unable to attend school due to flooding and poor road conditions. This leads to a decrease in school attendance rates and subsequently affects the overall academic performance of the students.

In a study conducted by Ogunyemi (2018), it was found that the dry season also poses challenges to teaching and learning in secondary schools. The high temperatures during this period often result in uncomfortable learning environments. This discomfort can lead to a decrease in student concentration and overall academic performance. Furthermore, the dry season often coincides with farming activities in rural areas, leading to a decrease in school attendance as students assist their families in farming activities.

The impact of seasonal variation on teaching and learning is not only limited to student attendance and concentration. According to a study by Umar and Abdullahi (2019), seasonal variation also affects the availability and quality of teaching resources. During the rainy season, for instance, there is often a shortage of textbooks and other learning materials due to damage caused by the rain. This shortage of resources can hinder effective teaching and learning.

Moreover, seasonal variation can also affect the health of students, which in turn affects their academic performance. According to a study by Okonkwo and Okonkwo (2020), the rainy season often leads to an increase in the prevalence of malaria among students. This increase in illness can lead to a decrease in school attendance and academic performance.

In light of these challenges, several studies have recommended strategies to mitigate the impact of seasonal variation on teaching and learning. For instance, Adebayo (2017) suggests the construction of all-weather roads to improve access to schools during the rainy season. Similarly, Ogunyemi (2018) recommends the provision of adequate ventilation in classrooms to improve the learning environment during the dry season.

Furthermore, seasonal variation has a significant impact on teaching and learning in secondary schools in Nigeria. Therefore, it is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders in the education sector to consider these seasonal factors when planning and implementing educational policies and programs.
