CHAPTER ONE

1.0.                                                     INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the study

Naturally, concrete is the solid part of a structure which is casted and cured using any of the methods of curing to strengthen it .Curing is the protection of fresh concrete from evaporation and temperature extremes which might adversely affect cement hydration. If concrete is to gain potential strength and durability, it must have sufficient water for the hydration of the cement and temperature conducive to maintain this chemical reaction at a rapid continuous rate. (Holcim, 2016). Curing is the process of maintaining satisfactory moisture content and temperature on freshly casted concrete for a definite period of time immediately following placement to strengthen the concrete. (Holcim, 2016)

Recycled aggregate is produced by crushing concrete and sometimes asphalt to reclaim the aggregate. It is the process of crushing waste concrete and reused so as to be resourceful. (Wikipedia the free encyclopedia, 2011).This research work seeks to reuse recycle aggregate from waste concrete ordinarily left as waste material and to be cured in different curing condition.

1.2. Statement of Problem

Most contractors either tend to short cut curing requirements in the field or ignore them almost completely. It was revealed that 44% of concrete used in non-residential construction were not cured and only 46% were cured in accordance with construction specifications. Most contract specifications usually contain curing requirements; however, they are rarely adhered to on field (Neville 1996). This research work is aimed at determining the effects of curing regime on the compressive strength of concrete using recycled aggregate.

1.3. Aim and Objectives

1.3.1   Aim

The aim of this project work is to determine the effect of different methods of curing on the properties of concrete using recycled coarse aggregate.

1.3.2   Objectives

  1. To determine the abrasive resistance of the concrete using recycled coarse aggregate subjected to different curing methods.
  2. To determine the compressive strength of concrete using recycled coarse aggregate using various methods of curing.

1.4   Scope of the study

This Project work covers the study of different methods of curing such as water curing, membrane curing, sprinkling with water and sample exposed in an open air for concrete using recycled aggregate.
