1.1 Background of the Study
Strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are a persistent problem in Nigeria, delaying classes and otherwise interfering with student life. The union has gone on strike over a number of problems concerning the well-being of its members and the non-implementation of agreements agreed with the administration.
Students’ mental health as a result of ASUU strikes is an under-researched area. Though the strike’s effect on students’ grades has been well-documented, the toll it takes on their emotional well-being is less frequently considered. The purpose of this research is to determine if and how the ASUU strike affected students’ emotional well-being. Anxiety, sadness, and other mental health problems are common among college students, and the ASUU strike just makes matters worse. Strike-related financial stress can exacerbate mental health problems, which disproportionately impacts students from low-income households.
Overloading students due to an extended academic calendar as a result of the strike is another potential outcome. Students’ mental health may be negatively impacted by the isolation caused by the strike. In order to prevent the ASUU strike from having a negative effect on students’ mental health, it is crucial to take action.
Many studies have looked at how the ASUU strike affected students, with a focus on how it affected their emotional well-being. Adeoye and Adebiyi (2016) conducted research showing that students’ mental health is negatively affected by the ASUU strike. Students’ emotional well-being before, during, and after a strike was evaluated using a multi-pronged methodology. The results showed that students felt anxious, depressed, despairing, and unmotivated during the strike. They complained of being lonely, bored, and aimless, all of which interfered with their ability to focus and learn.
Okobia and Alason (2018) also looked at the emotional toll that the ASUU strike took on Nigerian college kids. The study used a survey methodology to collect data from 186 college and university students before, during, and after a strike. The results revealed that students felt a range of negative emotions throughout the strike, including anxiety, despair, and anger.
Students who were already in a better emotional place prior to the strike showed the greatest resilience in the face of the strike’s negative consequences, the research found. In addition, Agada and Oseni’s (2019) research looked at how Nigerian college students dealt with the stress of the ASUU strike. Results from in-depth interviews with sixteen undergraduates revealed that students used a variety of coping mechanisms, such as reaching out to friends and family, participating in hobbies, and rethinking negative beliefs. Students’ mental health outcomes throughout the strike were shown to be affected by the coping mechanisms they utilized during the strike, with those using more effective coping strategies experiencing less discomfort. Asekun-Olarinmoye et al. (2020) conducted research on how the ASUU strike affected the mental health of Nigerian medical students. During and after a strike, data were collected from 129 medical students using a cross-sectional design. The results demonstrated that the strike had a profoundly detrimental impact on the mental health of medical students, with many reporting feelings of stress, burnout, and emotional tiredness.
The strike had less of an impact on students who had strong social networks, according to the study. Prolonged school absenteeism due to the ASUU strike has been linked to increasing drug misuse among pupils, according to studies. Substance usage among Nigerian college students was studied by Olowomofe and Ikusika (2020) before, during, and after a strike. Substance misuse was shown to be more prevalent during the strike than before or after it.
Long-term school absenteeism was also linked to more frequent drug misuse in the research. As a result, the ASUU strike has had a major negative impact on the emotional well-being of Nigerian college students. Students’ worry, melancholy, pessimism, and lack of drive are all exacerbated by the strike’s interference with their schoolwork. The negative impacts of the strike on students’ mental health can be mitigated with the use of effective coping mechanisms, social support, and emotional stability. Industrial action can have a harmful effect on students’ mental health, thus the government and the union should try to work out their issues peacefully.
1.2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike has become a recurring problem in the Nigerian education system. The strike has led to the shutdown of universities, resulting in extended academic calendars and delayed graduation for students. While the strike’s impact on academic progress is well documented, its effect on the mental health of students is an issue that has not been explored adequately. Studies have shown that academic stress is a significant contributor to mental health issues in students (Chowdhury, 2020).
The ASUU strike exacerbates this stress, leading to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. The prolonged stay at home and the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of academic activities can be a source of stress for students. Furthermore, the ASUU strike affects students from low-income families disproportionately. These students rely on scholarships, grants, and part-time jobs to fund their education. The strike disrupts their sources of income, leading to financial stress, which can contribute to mental health issues (Liu et al., 2021).
The impact of the ASUU strike on the mental health of students is not limited to the strike period alone. The extended academic calendar resulting from the strike leads to compressed academic activities, including exams, assignments, and projects. This situation can overload students, leading to anxiety, depression, and even burnout (Chowdhury, 2020). Moreover, the ASUU strike can also lead to social isolation for students. The prolonged stay at home can lead to a lack of social interaction, which can affect students’ mental health (Liu et al., 2021). Social interaction is essential for students’ mental health as it provides a sense of belonging and support.
1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Generally, the purpose of the study is to find out how strike action influences the academic performance of student in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Specifically it seeks to:
- Find out how ASUU strike affect the Mental Health of Student in University.
- Examine the Psychological Effect of ASUU Strike on Student reading concentration.
- Ascertain the extent to which strike action influences the academic performance of students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
- Identify the causes of strike action by the various unions in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
- Find out the implications of strike action in the Nigerian tertiary system.
- Suggest possible solution to the incessant strike action in our tertiary institutions.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION
The study will be guided by the following questions;
- How does ASUU strike affect the mental health of student in university?
- Does ASUU strike have a Psychological Effect on Student reading concentration.
- To what extent does strike action influence the academic performance of students?
- What are the causes of strike action in tertiary institutions in Nigeria?
- What are the implications of strike action in the Nigerian tertiary system?
- What are the possible solutions to strike actions?
1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
Ho: ASUU strike will not affect students mental health in the University
Ha: ASUU strike will affect students mental health in the University.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study will also contribute to the existing literature on the mental health impact of academic stress and the ASUU strike. It will provide a deeper understanding of the issues that students face during the strike and the impact of these issues on their mental health.
Moreover, the study will raise awareness among students of the importance of taking care of their mental health during the strike. It will provide information on the resources available to students to help them cope with the stress and anxiety caused by the strike.
The mental health impact of the ASUU strike on students is a significant issue that needs to be addressed. This study will contribute to a better understanding of the impact of the strike on students’ mental health and provide insights that can inform policies and interventions aimed at mitigating the negative effects of the strike on students’ mental health. Ultimately, this study will help ensure that students’ overall well-being is not compromised during the ASUU strike.
1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The study would examine the Effect of ASUU strike on mental health of students with particular reference to Imo State University. The respondents for the study will be specifically obtained from mass communication students of the school.
1.8 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
Like in every human endeavour, the researcher encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the researcher simultaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.
1.9 DEFINITION OF THE STUDY
Mental health: Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life.
Industrial Relations: A tripartite relationship involving three parties namely: – the owner of work, the employees or their representatives and government agency for the purpose of setting job rules and regulations.
Strike action: This is what happens when a group of employees conduct a work stoppage which will affect the condition of the job generally.
Student: A student is a person enrolled in a school or other educational institution.
Academic performance: Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across various academic subjects.
Reading Concentration: It involves using techniques such as skimming and scanning to focus on the most important information in a text.
