CHAPTER ONE: Introduction

1.1       Background to the Study

In recent years, various sectors such as entertainment, education, health and businesses are being dominated by mobile applications. The reason for this is that mobile computing is able to provide a tool for the user when and where it is needed irrespective of user movement, hence supporting location independence (Niroshinie et al., 2019).

Focusing on education sector, especially as it pertains to students, quiz/examination plays a vital role. The quiz/examination procedure may be manual, web based or online and mobile based. This enables students to take their quiz/examination using a mobile device, view their quiz/examination result immediately after taken, update their profiles as expected of the students. While most educational institutions are gradually leaving the manual method of taking quiz/examination behind so as to embrace the web based and online quiz/examination method, the possibility of using a mobile application has not been explored (Emmanuel et al., 2019). As more and more teachers in tertiary education experiment with technology, looking for new ways of enhancing their traditional ways of teaching, the need for flexible tools to support well planned, blended learning scenarios is emerging (Georgouli et al., 2018). While the impact of web or online quiz/examination system is appreciated, the advent of mobile communication technology is changing the face of Information Technology (IT).

Development of an android-based Quiz/Examination application is mainly required by students and learners to prepare themselves for different quiz/examinations directly through smart phones and tablets in hands. One of the major goal of this android application is to facilitate students in learning, gaining and improving their knowledge skills.

This study therefore tends to develop an Android-based Quiz/Examination application for CSC 111 of Federal University of Lafia so as to facilitate the users (100 Level students) to be able to take short quiz/examination using portable devices such as smart phones and tablets.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

Mobile technologies are becoming more embedded, ubiquitous and networked with enhanced capabilities for rich social interactions, context awareness and internet connectivity (Laura et al, 2018). Mobile phone seems to be an asset most individuals’ especially students’ possess and take almost everywhere with them; it is therefore a highly effective means of bringing information to them faster, easily and on the move (Emmanuel  et al., 2019).

Currently, most universities conduct their quiz/examination using paper based, which costs time and resources, which Federal University of Lafia is not excluded. In a paper based quiz/examination method, questions will be drafted, typed and printed, photocopies will be made to all the students offering a particular course. After the quiz/examination, lecturers are left with the stress of marking and compiling the results, which tends to be stressful depending the number of students offering the course.

A close observation of the students of Federal University of Lafia using 100 student’s shows that 68% prefers mobile apps because they are faster while 70% are of the opinion that mobile apps are easier to use when compared to a web platform. Therefore, with an aim to take advantage of the opportunities provided by mobile applications while addressing problems inherent in web based or manual quiz/examination system, this project work tends to bring quiz/examination to the doorsteps of the students of Federal University Lafia by developing a Mobile Application Based Quiz/Examination Platform.

1.3       Aim and Objectives of the Study

Aim

The aim of this project is to develop an Android-based Quiz/Examination application for 100 level students of Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria for taking quiz/examination.

Objectives

Other objectives of the research include:

  1. To identify and model the requirements specification to develop the android application.
  2. To ease the work of using manual quiz/examination system by implementing the developed Android-Based Quiz/Examination Application.
  3. To provide mobile quiz/examination platform to students of Federal University of Lafia without a location being a barrier.
  4. To upgrade from the manual system, web based and provide mobile quiz/examination platform as an alternative.

1.4       Scope of the Study

This project work focuses mainly on the development of an android application for CSC 111 Quiz/Examination that can be applicable every university in Nigeria but with particular reference to Federal University of Lafia.

1.5       Significance of the Study

The development of an android-based quiz/examination application will be of significance to the following; the staff/lecturers of Federal University of Lafia, 100 level students of Federal University of Lafia other scholars/researchers etc.

The android quiz/examination app is important in future learning systems; it can be easily adopted by educational institutions and universities such as Federal University of Lafia in order to make the exam more flexible and more secure.

The students of Federal University of Lafia will find the outcome of this study useful as the result of the study will ease the stress involved the manual means of conducting and writing quiz/examination. The students will also be able to practice quiz/examinations questions at their comfort zone using their mobile phones without location being a barrier.

The lectures of Federal University of Lafia will also find the outcome of this study resourceful as the outcome will also ease their stress of setting quiz/examinations manually and also enhance easy processing of making, scoring and compiling quiz/examination results.

The proposed system is easy and flexible for future maintenance and development because each subsystem can be handled separately without influence on other system.

Finally, the study is of significant to other researchers who may want to carry out research in the same research area using different methodology as this report will serve as a guide and a reference material to carry out the research work.

1.6       Limitation of the Study

This study has the following limitations:

  1. The Android-based Quiz/Examination application for CSC 111 is a web application; hence, it will require internet connectivity to access it.
  2. The Android-based Quiz/Examination application for CSC 111 is only limited to only 100 level students of Federal University of Lafia.

1.7       Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the features of the existing quiz/examination platform in Federal University of Lafia?
  2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the existing quiz/examination platform in Federal University of Lafia?
  3. What are the alternative solutions to the weaknesses/problems of the quiz/examination platform in Federal University of Lafia?

1.8       Definition of Terms

Development: is the set of processes and programming tools used to create the program or software product.

Android Application: is a software application running on the Android platform. Because the Android platform is built for mobile devices, a typical Android app is designed for a smartphone or a tablet PC running on the Android OS.

Quiz: a test of knowledge, especially as a competition between individuals or teams as a form of entertainment.

Examination: a formal test of a person’s knowledge or proficiency in a subject or skill.

Web Application: is application software that runs on a web server, unlike computer-based software programs that are run locally on the operating system (OS) of the device. Web applications are accessed by the user through a web browser with an active network connection.

System: system is a combination or arrangement of parts to form an integrated whole. A system includes an orderly arrangement according to some common principles or rules.
