INTRODUCTION

1.0     INTRODUCTION

Virtual learning is defined as learning that can functionally and effectively occur in the absence of traditional classroom environments. A virtual learning environment in educational technology is a web-based platform for the digital aspects of courses of study, usually within educational institutions. They present resources, activities, and interactions within a course structure and provide for the different stages of assessment. Virtual learning is a system designed to help students gain access and acquire knowledge in any university of their choice. It can include: Enhance face –to- face instruction on campus, in class use of computer and the internet, enhanced distance education (on or off campus) individuals and group learning with both print and computer-based materials instruction entirely on- line (individual and group learning) (Simonson & Schlosser, 2016).

Virtual learning is a learning experience that is enhanced through utilizing computers and/or the internet both outside and inside the facilities of the educational organization. The instruction most commonly takes place in an online environment. The teaching activities are carried out online whereby the teacher and learners are physically separated (in terms of place, time, or both). Because of this mix virtual classroom and text based e-learning knowledge is moving towards every student being an e- learner at last for part of their study, whether through learning materials, e-mail for contacting teachers or any one of their myriad other e-learning applications.

With classes moved to a remote learning format for the remainder of the semester, instructors and students are eager to maintain the academic rigor and intellectual vibrancy of the classroom. Live video with interactive participation is one of the best ways for instructors and students alike to replicate the classroom experience. Zoom is a video collaboration tool that provides a click-and-connect conferencing solution. You can use it for classroom teaching and learning, group discussions, or even one-on-one office hour meetings.

Zoom is an easy-to-use tool to create a video meeting, invite students or colleagues, solicit participation, and share resources. It is as close to being in the same lecture hall or office as you can get while working and learning from home. Zoom combines video conferencing, online meetings and in-conference group chat info one easy-to-use tool that is ideal for online class use, and group work. The Zoom platform is a tool that makes the teaching process easier and gives the opportunity to teachers and learners to expand their knowledge better. Many institutions in different countries used Zoom in order to increase student’s motivation. Many universities are training students to integrate technology like ZOOM applications to be used during instruction within education because people are rapidly adapting to accessing these technologies to facilitate communication which leads to the widespread popularity of distance learning (Romoszowski & Mason, 2014).

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Long before the internet was launched, distance courses were being offered to provide students with education on particular subjects or skills. In 1840′s Isaac Pitman taught his pupils shorthand via correspondence. This form of symbolic writing was designed to improve writing speed and was popular amongst secretaries, and other individuals who did a great deal of note taking or writing. Pitman, who was a qualified teacher, was sent completed assignments by mail and he would then send his students more work to be finished using the same system. In 1924, the first testing machine was invented. Then, in 1954, BF Skinner, a Harvard Professor, invented the “teaching machine”, which enabled schools to administer programmed instruction to their students, (Allen & Seaman, 2017).

Slide projectors and television-based classes have been in use since the 1950s. However, one of the first instances of online learning in the world can be traced back to 1960, at the University of Illinois, USA. Though the internet was not invented back then, students began learning from computer terminals that were interlinked to form a network. The first-ever completely online course was offered in 1984 by the University of Toronto. In 1986, the Electronic University Network was established for being used in DOS and Commodore 64 computers. Three years later, the University of Phoenix became the first educational institution in the world to launch a wholly online collegiate institution.

This was the beginning of a revolution whose potential was largely unknown to the public back then, but one that would make learning greatly accessible and within reach of what people could ever have imagined. The Open University in Britain was one of the first universities in the world to begin online distance learning, in the early 1990s. Currently, the Indira Gandhi National Open University in India is the largest university in the world with around 4 million students enrolled, most of whom currently receive education via online methods. In the 2000′s, businesses began using e-learning to train their employees. New and experienced workers alike now had the opportunity to improve upon their industry knowledge base and expand their skill sets. At home, individuals were granted access to programs that offered them the ability to earn online degrees and enrich their lives through expanded knowledge.

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

On the path of achieving academic excellence, some certain challenges arises along the line. Some of these challenges includes inconvenience and distance. Some individuals may love to study a certain course in a very distant location from their residence, they may have the funds to pay for the tuition fee but no funds for travelling and staying in the academic institution area. This scenario have influenced the achievement of some individuals’ academic performance since distance became an inevitable barrier.

1.3     AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is to design and implement a virtual learning system using the zoom technology.

The objectives of the study are stated as follows:

  • To provide a platform for enhancing education reach to people across the world
  • To provide an interactive learning virtual classroom where students can learn from the comfort of their home or anywhere they are at any point in time
  • To provide a system that can accommodate many students as possible
  • To eliminate the problem of stage fright that prevents students from asking questions due to inferiority feeling
  • To incorporate the concept of zoom platform into virtual learning

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The success of this study will be very beneficial to both students and lecturers or tutors globally. In implementing the objectives of this study, the result will erase lots of problems associated with the manual learning material system. The study will benefit institution since it will enable users to access learning resource digitally without the inconveniences of students carrying books, journals, magazines etc. which could result in rapid wear and tear of these resource.

1.5     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study focused on implementing virtual learning using Zoom in the teaching process in Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara.

1.6     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Time and financial constraints has constrained this research work in terms of design. While on the phase of implementation, the limitation of the proposed system is as follows;

  • The web based learning material system requires technical skills to manage and operate, thus staff that are not computer literate cannot use the system
  • Advance techniques are not used to check authorization
  • The system works as a standalone computer application in its compactable environment.
