CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

The automated semester’s result computation system is a software design and implement for student result computation, it helps the exam officers in the department in compiling of student’s result.

The errors associated with the existing compiling method of students results, make it not desirable and imperative that computerized approach be used. The excel methods being employed is difficult in terms of formular imputation, because of this it is not user friendly. And to the exam officers who cannot professionally use the excel platform. This lead to examination results being published late, sometimes with wrong data being entered and students’ grade point averages being wrongly computed. The ultimately leads to wrong conclusions. Some students could end up with undeserved good class of degree, while others could be unfairly victimized, bringing about frustration. The Departments concerned, could become tarnished. The problem, therefore, that arises is to find a method of processing semesters results that would be sufficiently accurate and reasonably timely. The software application in this article is intended to bring relieve by providing for timely and accurate processing of students results using the processing power of the computer. The rest of the article discusses the background to this work, the materials and method used in the work, and the results recorded.

Statement of the Problem

This research work was motivated by many problems and obstacles in the development of student’s semester result computation. These problems include:

Repetition of work after correction.
Delay in declaration of result.

Time consuming in data entry.

Aims and objective of the study:

The aim of this research work is to develop software that is user friendly to exam result computation. The objectives to realize the needed aim are as follows:

To analyses the concept of automated semesters result computation system.
To design and implement software that depicts an automated semester’s result computation system.

To examine the prospects of automated semester’s result computation system.

To point out challenges of automated semester’s result computation system.
To proffer solutions to the possible challenges of automated semester’s result computation system.

Scope of the study

This research work is limited to development of semester’s result computation of student examination. Computer science department, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekepene was used as novel example. Data used for the study was gotten from site study only and other experienced materials for result computation.

Significance of the study

The need for carrying out this work is to see the need for a computerized semesters result computation. This work is targeted on providing not only a brochure but provide both value and services to the department of computer science and Akwa Ibom Sate Polytechnic at large. To have an instance error free semesters result presented to Academic Board of the institution.

Organization of the Research

This research work is arranged in the following order:

chapter one is the introductory chapter, it focuses on the preliminaries, statements of the problems, aim and objectives of the study, scope of the study, significance of the study, limitation of the study, organization of the study and certain definition of terms.

Chapter two focuses on theoretical background, review related literature and takes a critical look at the concepts, citations, comments and ideology of various author on the subject matter.

Chapter three is concerned with the system design with emphasis on design and concentrates on the algorithm and flowchart, input and output design. It also explains the development of the network management system. Chapter four dwells on the system implementation. It takes an overview of the system block diagram, choice of programming, analysis of modules, programming environment and system implementation.

While Chapter five centered on summary, constraints of the study, recommendation and conclusion.

1.6 Limitation of the Study

The problems encountered during the course of carrying out this research include:

Time for the research was too short couple with other academic work.
Lack of fund to take care of transportation and other expenses.
Lack of access to research materials on the topic in the polytechnic and public libraries.

1.7 Definition of Terms

To do away with ambiguity, the following terms are hereby defined for easy comprehension.

Automated: Is something made automatic or done by a machine.

Examination: This is the formal test involving answering written or oral questions with no or limited access to text book.

Semester: One of the two periods that the school or college year is divided into.

Design: In this context, it has to do with the coding of the program (software).

File: This can be defined as complete collection of related records or information.

Data Base: This is a collection of related files.Is used to store information about an application.

Management: is a person or group of person that take responsibility that affect the group of persons.

Database management System (DBMS): this is a collection of programs (software) that create, modify, stores and retrieved information from the database.

Computer: This is an electronic device or programmable machine that is capable of accepting data as input, process the data, store them and sent out the result of the processing as output according to logical instruction given by the user.
