CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background study

Conflict management among Christian churches in Nigeria is a complex issue. Nigeria has a diverse religious landscape, with Christianity being one of the major religions in the country. There are various Christian denominations and churches in Nigeria, each with its own beliefs, practices, and leadership structures.

Conflicts among Christian churches in Nigeria can arise due to a variety of factors, including theological differences, competition for members and resources, leadership disputes, and socio-political tensions. These conflicts can manifest at different levels, ranging from local disputes between individual churches to larger-scale conflicts between denominations or groups of churches (Sande, 2003).

To manage conflicts, Christian churches in Nigeria employ various strategies. These may include dialogue and mediation, where representatives from conflicting parties come together to discuss their differences and seek common ground. In some cases, external mediators, such as religious leaders from other denominations or respected community members, may be involved to facilitate the resolution process (Anderson, 2000).

Additionally, some churches in Nigeria have established conflict resolution committees or bodies within their organizational structures. These committees are responsible for addressing conflicts and promoting peaceful resolutions within the church community. They may provide platforms for grievances to be heard, conduct investigations, and make recommendations for reconciliation (Maxwell, 2007).

Furthermore, interfaith dialogue and collaboration initiatives are also employed to foster understanding and peaceful coexistence between different religious groups, including Christian churches. These initiatives aim to promote tolerance, respect, and mutual understanding among different religious communities in Nigeria.

It’s important to note that conflict management among Christian churches in Nigeria is an ongoing process, and the effectiveness of these strategies can vary depending on the specific context and circumstances of each conflict.

1.2    Statement Of The Problem

One of the main causes of conflict among Christian churches in Nigeria is the competition for members and resources. Nigeria has a large Christian population, and churches often compete for followers and financial support. This competition can lead to tensions and conflicts, as churches try to attract and retain members.

Another factor contributing to conflict is the differences in theological beliefs and practices among Christian churches. Nigeria is home to various Christian denominations, including Catholic, Protestant, and Pentecostal churches, each with its own distinct doctrines and traditions. These differences can lead to disagreements and conflicts, as churches may view each other as deviating from the true teachings of Christianity.

Furthermore, political and ethnic factors also play a role in conflict management among Christian churches in Nigeria. The country has a history of political and ethnic tensions, and these can spill over into the religious sphere. Churches may align themselves with different political or ethnic groups, leading to conflicts and divisions within the Christian community.

Additionally, the lack of effective conflict resolution mechanisms within Christian churches exacerbates the problem. Many churches do not have formal structures or processes in place to address conflicts and disagreements. This can result in conflicts escalating and becoming more difficult to resolve, leading to long-lasting divisions within the Christian community.

Lastly, external influences, such as the rise of extremist groups, can also contribute to conflict among Christian churches in Nigeria. These groups may target churches and their members, leading to fear and mistrust within the Christian community. This can further exacerbate existing conflicts and make it challenging for churches to work together towards peaceful resolutions.

Conflict management among Christian churches in Nigeria is a multifaceted issue that arises from competition for resources, theological differences, political and ethnic tensions, lack of effective conflict resolution mechanisms, and external influences. Addressing these factors and promoting dialogue and understanding among churches is crucial for fostering unity and peaceful coexistence within the Christian community in Nigeria.
