1.1 Background of the Study

Women entrepreneurs have been chosen as the new engines for growth as well as the rising stars of developing countries’ economies as it contributes to welfare and prosperity (Vossenberg, 2013). Meanwhile Forbes (2011) had earlier asked countries to forget foreign aid and focus on foreign investment in women entrepreneurs are they are the key drivers of economic growth. Nigeria despite its increasing population has failed to utilize the labour force leading to increase in unemployment in the country. As a result of rising unemployment and poverty level, engagement in entrepreneurship through self-employment is fast increasingly as a means of poverty alleviation, empowerment and overall economic growth.

The development of entrepreneurship as well as small firms is perceived as the foundation that may help the economy in its economic recovery efforts (Lincoln, 2012). The womens are choosing entrepreneurship by engaging in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) so as to contribute to family economic improvement.  Engagements in different entrepreneurial activities also help the womens to strike a balance between job and family commitment (Inegbenebor, 2006).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The needs and contribution of women entrepreneurs in the economy seem to be invisible and overlooked. Women entrepreneurs have long been dominated from the formal sector of the economy especially those in the rural area. As a result of unrelenting and deteriorating economic conditions, a lot of women have been forced to work outside normal status and have therefore ventured in varied economic activities, while at the same time continuing to perform their traditional household duties. Women entrepreneurs in the agricultural business sector are faced with variety of constraints ranging from access to market, poor linkages to supportive services, finance, undue competition from larger and established agricultural business units, cultural inhibitions, discrimination of all sort, transportation facilities among others.

These problems have reduced remarkably the volume and variety of production and employment possible for women entrepreneurs. Hence the need to address the issue because of the high labour absorption capacity of the sector, so as to stimulate employment opportunities for women for their personal survival and national development.
