Evaluation of social media contribution to political polarization in Nigeria

The emergence of social media has greatly impacted how people in Nigeria share and receive information, as well as how they express their own unique perspectives. As a result, political polarisation has grown as more people and organisations than ever before are able to share and spread their political beliefs and agendas online.

In Nigeria, social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become into potent instruments of political mobilisation. These sites are used by politicians and their followers to drum up support, spread misinformation, and attack their rivals. As a result, political discourse has become increasingly polarised, with little tolerance for more nuanced or empathetic points of view. Individuals are frequently exposed to one-sided information that confirms their current opinions and biases; this has contributed greatly to political polarisation.

Social media’s ability to shield users’ identities while expressing opinions online has also exacerbated Nigeria’s political divide. People are free to speak their minds on political issues without fear of repercussion, which has led to an increase in divisive and hateful discourse. This has further widened the gap between political factions, making it more challenging to have fruitful conversations and reach agreements.

The polarisation of Nigerian politics is not caused by social media alone, though. Ethnic and religious differences, economic disparities, and old grudges often play important roles. As a result, social media has contributed to political polarisation, but it is just one factor in the issue.

In conclusion, although social media has offered a forum for political discussion and mobilisation, it has also added to the country’s already deep partisan divide. Individuals and organisations need to be more cautious of the possible influence of their posts on political harmony while using social media. The proliferation of hate speech and polarising language on social media also calls for regulatory actions to be taken.
