Differences between obesity and overweight

Differences between obesity and overweight

When a person’s weight exceeds what is deemed healthy for their height, they are said to be obese or overweight. However, the two are not interchangeable. The degree of obesity and the associated health risks is the primary dividing line between the two.

An overweight person has extra fluid, muscle, bone, and fat on their bodies. On the other side, an excess of bodily fat is what we mean when we say someone is obese. Those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9 are considered overweight, while those with a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese.

When compared to the hazards posed by merely being overweight, those posed by obesity tend to be far more severe. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even some malignancies have all been related to obesity. While being overweight does enhance these risks, it does so to a lesser extent than being obese does.

Although both obesity and overweight imply a weight that is higher than what is considered acceptable, the latter condition is less severe and does not offer as significant a risk to health as obesity does. It’s worth noting that both illnesses may be avoided with the aid of a healthy weight maintained by a balanced diet and frequent physical activity.
