CHAPTER ONE

  • Introduction

The applications of computer in all spheres of human endeavor have been advocated by many experts and group in Nigeria and the society from a logical point of view. It seems that the computer should be applied in the context of these areas of human endeavor. The computer is applied as a powerful, useful and significant management tool for accounting, analyzing and interpreting record and data.

The computer has contributed immensely to the development of technological growth and innovation in the field of science and technology. However, because of the scope and nature of this study, it is necessary to mention and highlight some of these roles.

In computer-aided construction, instead of performing the program activities using program textbooks, materials are prepared and fed to the computer, the learner is now drilled on how to operate the computer so as to push out the frames and correct response provided on the program material.

Since the emergence of the computer, job processing and transfer of information has become a lot easier. The ability of the computer to process jobs accurately and on time has made it a necessary tool in virtually all the different works of life. The use of the computer in the educational sector has increased tremendously as computers can be found not only in tertiary institutions but also in elementary and secondary schools.

Teaching packages are developed using computers to help and combat the problems associated with the manual type of teaching and it also serves as a means to help and improve the students understanding and performance in the subject.

 

 

  • Statement Of Problem

The human brain is tickle and so cannot remember past events quickly, easily, and correctly. Even document written material tend to fade away with age. Teacher, like human beings, are no perfectionist and are prone to errors. With the advent of the computer in the world today, which has made the world a global village, there is a need to apply computer in learning as in teaching aids. How then can we develop programs (software) that can keep tracks on past event so that computer could be used to remember such events within a twinkle of an eye? This is the problem/subject of discussion of this project.

Lots of obstacles have been encountered due to the manual method of teaching English.

–      Sometimes, students avoid English lessons because they feel it is a language that is difficult to master.

–      Most teachers are not well grounded in the course

–      Proper attention not paid to students with low intelligent quotient (IQ) or students who are slow in learning.

 

1.3  Objectives of Study

Based on the problems stated above, the following are the objectives of this study:

–      To make the learning of English easier as the students can use the application at their own convenient time.

–      To make the students appreciate the need for more well-organized methods of teaching

–      To lessen the heavy burden teachers go through while teaching.

–    To design a mobile and user-friendly English teaching app that will make learning the subject fun and interesting.

  • Significance of the Study
  1. Application of computer will be useful to the proprietor of private schools in the country.
  2. Application of computer in learning will reduce the stress in the teaching associated with face to face conversation.
  3. It will benefit students at all level of educational pursuit as it will not only make them become computer literates but also ensure immediate knowledge of past event which is reinforcing.
  4. Government and policy makers in the educational sector will benefit immensely from this work as it will form a basis for the immediate implementation of curriculum in computer for effective teaching and learning in school.

 

  • Scope Of the Study

The study is limited to English studies with the aid of the textbook: Queen Premier with the use of the Android Platform as the development environment.

 

  • LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This project is limited to only to the application of computer-aided instruction in teaching and learning of English language with the aid of Queen Premier textbook. Due to limited time and money, the research regards was limited to only the use of the textbook

 

  • Definition of Terms

Terms associated with this topic are to be defined below.

Android SDK: The Android SDK (software development kit) is a set of development tools used to develop applications for Android platform.

Android: Android is a software for mobile phones, tablets and a growing range of devices covering everything from wearable computing to in-car entertainment.

Android is also a mobile operating system developed by Google. It is used by several smartphones and tablets.

ADB: ABD stands for Android Debug Bridge, a tool that is used primarily by developers to send commands from a computer to android.

APK: Android Application Package file used to distribute and install applications.

Android Manifest: Describes the fundamental characteristics of the application and defines each of its components.

  1. A. I Computer-Aided Instruction: here, programmed instruction is prepared and fed into the computer for teaching-learning purpose.

COMPUTER: an electronic device that is capable of solving the problems by accepting data, performing prescribed operations on the data accepted and supplying the results of those operations. It also a device that inputs, process, stores, and output the result of the operation at a very fast speed.

Debugger: A debugger is a computer program used by programmers to test and debug a target program.

Java: Java is a programming language that produces software for multiple platforms.

Learning: it simply means knowledge obtained by study or the process by which an activity originates or is changed through responding to a situation.

Programmed Instruction: it is a self-teaching device in which the learner does not proceed to a new learning task without completing the existing task at hand. This is based on the principle of conditioning.

Flowchart: it is a low-level graphical representation of a structure of a programme without emphasis on a control flow by the primitive action profound by the program rather than on the data structure employed by the program.

Data: it is a set of raw facts collected from different sources to make up a data.

Output: It is a processed data that is the information given by the computer after processing the data.

Input: it is a new fact that makes up a data, which are field into the computer.

Electronic: computer is an electronic device because the internal components are made of solid-state electronic component called chips.
