Preface

Transparency International, publishers of the annual Corruption Perception Index, has over the past seven years ranked Nigeria amongst the ten most corrupt nations in the world. Since the nation wrested its independence from the colonialists in 1960, corruption has remained a thorn in its sides. According to one of the nation‟s foremost nationalists, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, government, since independence, “Has been a matter of few holding the cow for the strongest and most cunning to milk, under those circumstances everybody runs over everybody to make good at the expense of others.” Corruption, and the primordial sentiments that attended its politics at inception, provided the impetus for the military‟s incursion into the nation‟s political sphere. Pledging to stamp out corruption, the military took over power in 1966 after the botched coup attempt of a few maverick Majors led by Major Emeka Nzeogwu. Nigerians, sick of the politicians‟ charade welcomed the soldiers. But the joy that attended the military take-over was short lived as corruption took on new, worrying, dimensions under a succession of military governments.
