ORGANIZATIONS RELIANCE ON CORP MEMBERS AS A RESULTING FACTOR FOR YOUTHS UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There are numerous factors that contribute to the problem of youth unemployment, especially in Nigeria, but there is a lack of a comprehensive document on the variables that define the problem. As a result, it is critical to collect detailed data on the factors that contributed to the youth unemployment crisis, especially in Nigeria. The findings will set a different course for future studies in the field and serve as a roadmap for policymakers about how to address the issue of youth unemployment. In an emerging economy like Nigeria, the youth are a critical productive asset in nation-building. However, if the youth are not meaningfully engaged, they become a security, social, and political danger to the nation, as we see in Nigeria today with abduction, militancy, Boko-Haram, political thuggery, and secessionist insurgency, among other vices.

The critical need to comprehensively chart the factors affecting the youth unemployment crisis is unavoidable if stakeholders want to intervene. For example, in Nigeria, the government has developed various intervention programs to create employment for the youth, such as the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Program (SURE-P), and the National Youth Services Corps (NYSC), among others, to address the problem of youth unemployment, but all of these efforts are a mirage because the programs are not sustainable. Youth are identified as people between the ages of 18 and 35 in the National Youth Development Policy (Oduwole, 2015).

Unemployment, as described by the International Labour Organization (ILO), occurs when people look for work but are unable to find one in a reasonable amount of time. According to Ajayi, 2015, the need for the government to support the development of factories and the expansion of the agriculture sector in order to help unemployed youth and encourage entrepreneurship and vocational training among them was emphasized. Ajayi (2015) and Oduwole (2015) proposed educational and entrepreneurship training programs to address the issue of youth unemployment.

Ogunyomi and Oginni (2013), opine that the encouragement of adolescents to pursue entrepreneurial and management skills training was emphasized. Okafor (2011) states that it should be noted that although unemployment is a global issue, it is particularly acute in developed economies. The unemployment issue in Nigeria is increasing geometrically, while employment is rising arithmetically, for a variety of reasons. Okafor (2011) said that youth empowerment and growth would help to reduce youth unemployment. Baba and Namahe (2015) stated that Nigeria’s growth is a result of youth empowerment by entrepreneurship since they are the cornerstone in a transition economy like Nigeria.

1.2  STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

Youth unemployment in Nigeria is a challenge that has been on for a long time. The ignorance played by the government in providing notable job opportunities to eligible unemployed youths or providing the necessary amenities to assist private organizations function well in the society which will help them allow for more employable seats, is very alarming. As a result of this, organizations are now dependent on only corp members because they can afford and use them as need be. Organizations barely employ eligible youths and find it hard to retain corp members.

This study seeks to examine the effects of the reliance of organizations on corp members on unemployed youths in Nigeria.
