INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Background to the Study

Girls have been scarred by the brutal crime of rape for many years. The implications on girls’ health (physical, mental, and emotional) are disastrous. As used above, “rape” refers to any sexual act performed on another person without their consent. As a form of sexual violence, it affects people of all sexes, including women, men, and boys. It ranks up there with the worst crimes ever committed against people. By reviewing relevant material, this study hopes to get a better understanding of how rape might affect a girl’s mental and physical health. The study will look at studies, journals, novels, and other sources to see how rape affects females’ lives in the long run. The Psychological Aftermath of Female Genital Mutilation Sexual assault has devastating and long-lasting effects on a girl’s mental health. Many victims of rape, particularly young women, struggle with mental health issues. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, drug misuse, and suicide thoughts are all more common among rape survivors, according to research (Counseling and Support Services, 2021).

A girl’s capacity to develop meaningful friendships, participate in extracurricular activities, and succeed in school may all suffer as a result of the trauma she experiences as a result of being raped. Rape victims are more likely to have low self-esteem, a negative body image, and a negative opinion of their own value, according to research (Kilpatrick, 2000). If a girl has a persistently low opinion of herself, she may struggle with suicide ideation throughout her life. In addition, females who have been raped may have difficulty trusting in the future. They have less social support since they are hesitant to form deep ties with others. Rape victims’ feelings of isolation, loneliness, and social disconnection are common. Long-term social and emotional difficulties are a possible outcome, as is a decline in quality of life.

There is evidence that rape increases the likelihood of anxiety problems in female victims. Anxiety can cause a variety of symptoms, including panic attacks, phobias, and GAD (Counseling and Support Services, 2021). Girls who suffer from anxiety disorders are more likely to struggle in school, which can have a negative impact on their future health and happiness. Repercussions of Female Genital Mutilation The physical and mental health consequences of rape on a girl are devastating. The physical trauma of rape can cause both immediate and long-term health issues for the victim. Sexually transmitted infections (STDs) are the most devastating physical repercussion of rape. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis are more common among girls who have been raped. Infertility, persistent pelvic discomfort, and other abnormalities of the reproductive system are only some of the long-term physical health issues that can result from these conditions (Kilpatrick, 2000).

Girls who have been victims of rape are also more likely to get UTIs and other vaginal illnesses. Urinary incontinence, recurring UTIs, and other urinary issues might result from the force used during rape (Counseling and Support Services, 2021). Additional negative effects on a girl’s physical and mental health can result from an unwanted pregnancy, which is more common among rape victims. Girls who have been the victims of rape are more likely to develop eating disorders such bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating disorder, according to research (Kilpatrick, 2000).

Malnutrition, tooth decay, and other difficulties associated to poor diet are only some of the long-term physical health consequences of these illnesses. Girls who have been the victims of rape are also more likely to develop substance use disorders. The girl’s physical health may suffer significantly and persistently as a result of her addiction. Conclusion In conclusion, rape is a terrible crime that may have lasting impacts on a girl’s body, mind, and spirit.

Raped girls are more likely to have mental health issues such despair, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, drug misuse, and suicide thoughts. Rape has been linked to a variety of negative health outcomes, such as sexually transmitted infections, urinary tract infections, unintended pregnancies, eating disorders, and drug misuse. Therefore, it is crucial to educate people about the consequences of rape and to take steps to stop it from happening. The long-term effects of rape can be mitigated by providing survivors with services including counseling, medical treatment, and legal representation.
