AN EXAMINATION INTO THE INFLUENCE OF E-LEARNING TO THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF  SECONDARY SCHOOLS STUDENTS IN ONDO STATE

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The development of information and communication technology has fueled advancement in a variety of domains, including the economy, commerce, communication, health, and education, as well as training and instruction. Since its start in the year 1990, the field of e-Learning has seen significant growth, and the education industry has been pushed to embrace e-Learning in order to modify conventional learning settings and develop learning experiences that are both more efficient and more appealing. E-Learning is a direct outcome of the combination of technology and education, which makes it possible to develop novel research and delivery methods. This is one of the characteristics of contemporary learning, and it is the primary focus of this study. The domains of education and learning have profited from the use of electronic distribution because it allows them to transcend the barriers of time, space, and geography, therefore enabling learning possibilities for anybody, at any time, in any location, and in any format (Rajasingham, 2009). As a result, e-learning provides a foundation for the development of knowledge-based communities as an educational resource, as well as the opportunity to reimagine the future of the country and ensure the safety of educational institutions (UNESCO, 2005). E-Learning represents a new generation of learning that has the potential to assist various educational settings in accomplishing a wide range of goals (Vrana et al., 2006). E-Learning stimulates the learning experience through collaboration by enabling the delivery of resource-rich educational content, encouraging interaction between teachers and students (Zhang et al., 2004), and empowering learners to manage their own learning modes and create meaningful learning environments. E-Learning stimulates the learning experience through collaboration by enabling the delivery of resource-rich educational content, encouraging interaction between teachers and students (Zhang et al., 2004 E-Learning assembles a new educational context, produces new roles for instructors, gives additional possibilities for students, and designs learning environments that support and enrich the learning experience. [Citation needed] According to Jethro et al. (2012), e-learning offers learners novel and inventive means of motivating and engaging them to develop their interests based on their educational potential. E-learning also enables learners to organize the content and knowledge according to their own requirements and preferred modes of learning, which enhances the overall quality of the learning experience and bolsters it by providing differentiated learning. Students are able to access not only the course materials but also a massive amount of information from the internet that is relevant to their studies at any time and from anywhere. According to Al-Harbi (2010), e-Learning overcomes temporal and geographical barriers by offering learning anytime and anywhere. Learning that lasts a lifetime is promoted via e-learning, which has flexible scheduling to accommodate individual learners’ requirements. E-learning has the unique capacity to reconcile two seemingly contradictory educational tenets: individualism and cooperation (Asiri et al., 2012). E-Learning also supports synchronous and asynchronous communications in a variety of formats, including text, voice, and video. This means that people can be connected in both personal and public settings, thereby fostering both autonomy and social interdependence simultaneously. Additionally, this type of learning can develop students’ understanding and enrich their educational experiences (Al-Harbi, 2010). E-Learning may be understood in a number of ways, despite the fact that it has gained widespread acceptance as a method of education and training. E-Learning is described as “education offered through all electronic media including the internet, intranets, extranets, satellite broadcasts, audio/video tape, interactive TV, and CD-ROM.” This definition comes from Govindasamy (2002). According to Khan (2005), the term “e-learning” refers to a “innovative approach for delivering a well-designed, learner-centred, interactive, and facilitated learning environment to anyone, anyplace, at any time, by utilizing the attributes and resources of various digital technologies along with other forms of learning materials suited for open and distributed learning environments.” ELearning is described as a “new method to education delivery using electronic forms of information that increase the learner’s knowledge, abilities, or other performance,” according to Bhuasiri et al. (2012). E-Learning, also known as distance learning or e-learning, is the practice of providing the learning and teaching process through electronic means to improve the quality of learning and the overall performance of learners. It is the idea that makes educational reform more effective by causing a paradigm shift away from an education that is centered on the teacher and is based on retention, and toward an education that is centered on the student, in which students work together to construct their own knowledge, improve their ability to solve problems, and develop higher-order thinking skills.

Hence the need to look into the influence of e-learning to the teaching and learning of  secondary schools students in ondo state.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

E-Learning has been incorporated into many educational institutions in order to reap the benefits of the rapid developments in technology that assist in improving the learning experience and increasing its efficacy. This has allowed many educational institutions to reap the benefits of the rapid developments in technology. Over the last couple of decades, there has been significant development in the field of e-learning, and the percentage of educational institutions that have adopted e-learning has surpassed 35 percent (Al-Marabeh and Mohammad, 2013; Sun et al., 2008; Levy 2007). E-learning has been incorporated into more and more educational institutions in recent years. It has had a significant influence on the development of a student’s personality, in addition to having a transformative effect on the learning and teaching processes, as well as the creation of new options for secondary school students. It has helped students to study, work, and prepare for the needs of competitive jobs as well as university courses, and it has increased their interaction and communication skills, allowing them to effectively live in a society that is founded on information and is global in scope (Newhouse, 2002; Vrana et al., 2006). E-Learning has been effectively adopted in a variety of educational contexts; yet, the implementation of E-Learning projects may experience sluggish development, and many E-Learning ventures do not continue (Liaw, 2008; Neyland, 2011; Frimpon, 2012). Despite this, the use of e-learning presents a number of problems, the most significant of which is adjustment. To begin, the transition to online education may be challenging in and of itself, resulting in challenges such as visual learning, a lack of clarity, a lack of motivation, decreased knowledge retention, and weakened logical and intellectual abilities.  Therefore it is expedient that this study look into the influence of e-learning to the teaching and learning of  secondary schools students in ondo state.

1.3     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The general objective of the study is to examine the influence of e-learning to the teaching and learning of secondary schools students in ondo state. The specific objectives are:

i.          To examine the effect of E- learning on teachers teaching of secondary school students.

ii.        To find out if E-learning influence the retentive learning of secondary school students.

iii.      To investigate the challenges in the use of E-learning  in the teaching and learning of secondary school students.

iv.      To assess ways at improving the E- learning in the teaching and learning of secondary school students.

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following questions have been prepared for the study:

i.          What is  the effect of E- learning on teachers teaching of secondary school students?

1.5     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research is of significant benefit to teachers, Government, pupils and students as well as the society at large and also educational planners.

The research will help the pupils and students to be able to learn effectively and intelligently, the government will try to prioritize education projects by funding them, teacher will improve on themselves by acquiring necessary professional skills even as good remuneration for them is being worked out, the schools will begin to excel in their examinations, the quality of education will be highly improved, corruption will be reduced and some with proven integrity will be raised higher.

The study will be significant to the academic community as it will contribute to the existing literature.

1.6     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study will examine the effect of E- learning on teachers teaching of secondary school students. The study will also find out if E-learning influence the retentive learning of secondary school students. The study will further investigate the challenges in the use of E-learning  in the teaching and learning of secondary school students. Lastly, the study assess ways at improving the E- learning in the teaching and learning of secondary school students. Hence this study will be delimited to Ondo State.

1.7       LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher resorted to a moderate choice of sample size. More so, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

1.8     DEFINITION OF TERMS
